Between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lamas were the most powerful political leaders in Tibet, controlling a large portion of the country from their capital at Lhasa.
The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the head of the Gelug, but this position officially belongs to the Ganden Tripa (Holder of the Throne of Ganden, the first monastery established by Lama Je Tsong Khapa, founder of the Gelug).
Until the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in 1959, the Dalai Lamas resided in Lhasa in the Potala Palace during winter and in the Norbulingka residence during summer.

 The 12th Goshir Gyaltsap Rinpoche
A person who spent most of his life in retreat, he was a friend of the 5th Dalai Lama ("The Great Fifth.") When the 10th Karmapa had to flee the Mongol invasion, it was he who remained behind as regent.
The 7th Gyaltsab, Konchog Ozer (1699-1765,) installed by the 12th Karmapa, transmitted the lineage to the 13th Karmapa.

 Nenang Pawo, a biography
Around that time, His Holiness the Seventh Karmapa Chödrak Gyatso (1454-1506), was moving his huge “tent camp monastery” in the Lhodrak region of Southern Tibet, the site of Marpa Lotsawa’s residence at Drowo-lung and where Marpa’s disciple, Majestic Lord Milarepa, had built his famous tower, at Sekhar Guthog.
At present, since Pawo Rinpoche’s passing away, the abbotship has been taken up by his main disciple, Lama K. Tsultrim, who from the age of ten onwards received with the late Pawo all the same teachings and transmissions.
Together with Lama Chöphel his efforts have been directed towards the completion of the monastic foundation, not withstanding the financial difficulties experienced since 1991.
