However with the Piano Trio Tchaikovsky sought not only to celebrate Rubinstein's pianism with a rich and often virtuosic work for the piano, but also to satisfy the demands of his patron Nadezhda von Meck who had requested such a work for her own piano trio.
Tchaikovsky's Trio received its premier ten years earlier in 1882 with the noted composer and pianist Taneiev at the piano, Géimali playing the violin and Fitzenhagen (for whom the Rococo Variations were written) playing the cello.
Although the first movement employs a wealth of thematic material and expands sonata form to an unprecedented degree, the form is in fact ultimately truncated: the abrupt reprise of the lyrical violin and cello duet suddenly turns into a bridge towards the poignant coda.

Sleeve Notes - Rachmaninov: Piano Trios
Although it is, in length, overshadowed by the later Trio, and as a work of art is not in the same class, Rachmaninov's G minor Trio élégiaque possesses some admirable qualities, and the work does not deserve to be neglected.
The connections between these memorial trios run deeper; structurally, Rachmaninov's work is strongly based on Tchaikovsky's - to the extent of having a set of variations as the second movement, and the thematic likeness of both variation themes implies that Rachmaninov based his on Tchaikovsky's.
The original version of the Trio élégiaque was first performed in Moscow on 31 January 1894, in an all-Rachmaninov programme given by the composer with Brandukov and Julius Conus.

INKPOT#60 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: RACHMANINOV The "Elegiac" Piano Trios. Borodin Trio (Chandos)
The Borodin Trio tends to give you that no-nonsense approach to interpretation - I have found that often the melancholy can sound rather exaggerated by using extreme metronome markings, but they have a way at shaping the music so that their approach moves outwardly to encompass the music's larger paragraphs.
Rachmaninov in his later years made minor changes to the work and replaced the sixth variation with a trio and even remarked after the addition that "after the trio there must be nothing else, because it is so long and grave".

Rachmaninov's Trio élégiaque, Op 9 (not to be confused with an earlier, slighter Trio élégiaque in G minor), is chamber music in the grandest, heart-on-sleeve style.
Rachmaninov's trio, in turn, was written on the death of Tchaikovsky.
Shostakovich's Trio in E minor, another memorial work, written in 1944 on the death of the composer's great friend Ivan Sollertinsky, is more spare and bleak, more sharply cutting in its flness and despair, and altogether more individual in its handling of the medium.

Trio Elagiaque was founded in 2000 by three Première Prix winning graduates of the Paris Conservatoire, Romano Pallottini (piano), Laurent Le Flécher (violin) and Virginie Constant (cello), whose love for chamber music bonded them into a group that has emerged as one of the finest chamber ensembles in France.
The trio transcends traditional boundaries by performing not only works of standard repertoire but also contemporary and avant-garde composers such as Pascal Dusapin, Olivier Messiaen and Renaud Gagneux.
Currently Trio Elagiaque is ensemble-in-Residence at the prestigious Les Musicales de Pontivy International Music Festival in Brittany and just completed the first of several recording the Harmonia Mundi label featuring Messiaen's Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps with clarinetist Jean-Philippe Vivier.

The quality of the trio - extreme technical perfection and dynamic differentiation, balance and flexibility of their playing and a warm, lyrical sound - is highly impressive.
Moreover the trio found a style of interpretation, that doesn't revel only in technical perfection, but also strikes a balance between fidelity to the score and musical freedom, therefore creating a surprisingly "personal" interpretation.
The Clemente Trio demonstrated this despite the comparatively modest means of the trio formation.

I’ve always regarded Tchaikovsky’s A minor Piano Trio as among his greatest achievements, and though the record catalogue boasts a number of fine versions, I still feel it is somewhat under-rated, even by dedicated Tchaikovskians.
The gloriously melancholic opening melody (is there a finer one in all Tchaikovsky?) is spun with real feeling for line and contour, and when the sonorous second subject duly arrives (around 3’17), we feel that the shift in mood and colour is just right.
The Trio pays hommage melodically (the main theme is very similar to that in Tchaikovsky’s Trio), but has its own composer’s stamp at every turn.

This is most evident in the Scherzo of the Shostakovich Trio, where the interpretation is never settled - the players sound undecided whether the music here is charm or sarcasm or something else.
The Trio's treacherous opening cello harmonics, posed high above the violin, are played with non-deliberate uncertainty and there are other intonation issues for each of the players, notably at the beginning of the Largo, with a clunker in the piano's declamatory chords and several unsure notes from the violin.
