It may be taken for certain that wherever a Testudo occurs as a genuine native, it has got there by land, be the locality the Galapagos, Aldabra, Madagascar or some Malay islands.
The Trionychidae reveal themselves as of periarctic origin, being debarred from Australia, Madagascar and the neotropical region (alleged from Eocene Patagonia).
Testudinidae are cosmopolitan, excluding Australia, and practically also the Antilles; and Testudo is most instructive with its almost similar distribution; but something has gone wrong with this genus in America, where it flourished in mid-Tertiary times.

 AMNH Scientific Publications: Item 2246/972
These data suggest that the family Trionychidae shares a unique common ancestor with the Dermatemydidae, Kinosternidae, and Carettochelyidae, and that the Kinosternidae share a unique common ancestor with the Trionychidae and Carettochelyidae.
Furthermore, it appears that the staurotypine kinosternids are most closely related to the Trionychidae and Carettochelyidae.
Within the Trionychidae, the subfamilies Cyclanorbinae and Trionychinae are recognized as monophyletic clades.

 Turtle Molecular Phylogeny
The close relationship of mud turtles (Kinosternidae) and the monotypic family Dermatemydidae, as the Kinosternoidae, is supported as is the close relationships between softshells (Trionychidae) and the Fly River or Pignosed Turtle (Carettochelyidae) as the Trionychoidae.
On major conflict between the molecular evidence and previous morphological studies is the purported monophyly of the large superfamily Trionychoidea (Trionychidae, Carettochelyidae, Kinosternidae and Dermatemydidae).
Bootstrap analysis of the morphological data set demonstrates moderate support based on morphological characters, but it is not supported by the molecular data.
