Civil engineering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General civil engineering is concerned with the overall interface of fixed projects with the greater world.
General civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers to fit and serve fixed projects within their given site, community and terrain by designing grading, drainage (flood control), paving, water supply, sewer service, electric and communications supply and land (real property) divisions.
General civil engineers can also be referred to as municipal engineers, though this term is usually reserved for engineers employed by a municipality.

Trip generation characteristics of discount supermarkets Institute of Transportation Engineers. ITE Journal - Find ...
The trip generation profile of a typical store is important because it is necessary to determine the on-site and off-site transportation impacts associated with that store.
Trip type is important both in understanding trip origins and modal split and in enabling better planning of site access and parking to prevent spillover into residential neighborhoods.
ITE trip generation data for the supermarket land use represent average store sizes ranging from approximately 27,000 square feet to 53,000 square feet, with most of the data points based on the smaller store sizes.

Incorporating Accessibility in Non-Work Trip Generation Models in the San Francisco Bay Area
Hybrid trip generation models using multiple regression techniques, cross-classified by workers in household level and vehicles in household level, are estimated using data from the 1981 and 1990 household travel surveys.
Given that these two trip purposes combined comprise 36 percent of all Bay Area trips in 1990, the overall impact of a ten percent decrease in work trip duration would be a 0.40 percent increase in total trips generated by Bay Area residents.
By incorporating work trip duration as a variable in home-based shop/other and home-based social/ recreation trip generation models, we are able to address, at least in part, the issue of induced travel due to changes in congestion levels as they affect work trip duration.

In the planning of a system of new regional jails in West Virginia, a general lack of trip generation data for correctional facilities was noted.
Since the regional jails were a homogeneous grouping of correctional facilities with respect to facility type and size, the trip rates calculated for the regional jails are believed to be reliable.
Trip rates were calculated for the more generalized grouping of “correctional facilities” based on the synthesized database.

Bicycle/Pedestrian Trip Generation Workshop: Summary - March 1998
This trip set represents a 500 zone-by-500 zone origin-destination matrix, and is the summation of 500-by-500 trip sets for home-to-work, work-to-home, home-to-other, other-to-home, other-to-other, and through trips.
peak-hour trip set was converted to a divertable trip set by checking the trip distance in miles for the origin and destination, and factoring the total trip set into a divertable trip set, based on the trip purpose and trip distance.
Using this equation, a trip of 9.7 km (6 mi) would have a factor of 0.58; a trip of 16 km (10 mi) would have a factor of 0.13; and a trip of 32 km (20 mi) would have a factor of 0.02.

WSDOT - Research Reports - Evaluation of Travel Demand Managament Strategies in Trip Generation
Current trip generation models are insensitive to the effects of travel demand management (TDM) strategies (and perhaps so is the public).
The trip generation models were estimated, the significance of the variable representing the impacts of TDM strategies was analyzed and justified.
Many of the TDM "variables" were indeed significant in the trip generation model; however, in come cases, the significance of the variable can be attributed to factors that re not related to the effects of TDM schemes.

Online TDM Encyclopedia - Commute Trip Reduction (CTR)
Some governments make special efforts to implement commute trip reduction programs within their own agencies as a way to demonstrate leadership and as an opportunity to develop tools and experience that can be transferred to non-government organizations.
In large urban centers, trips tend to shift to transit and walking, while in lower-density areas more trips shift to carpooling and cycling.
A British study of CTR programs found that “Averaged overall, these organisations managed to reduce the numbers of cars arriving at their sites by more than 14 per 100 staff- more than an 18% reduction in the number of cars that were previously there.
