eMedicine - Triplane Fracture : Article by John L Abt, DO, FACEP, FACFE
Triplane fractures of the distal tibia are generally sustained during adolescence and occur before complete closure of the distal tibial physis (growth plate).
Triplane fracture involves the tibial metaphysis, tibial growth plate (physis), and the epiphysis.
The 3 fracture fragments thus produced are (1) a rectangular fragment of the anterolateral portion of the epiphysis, (2) the remainder of the epiphysis with an attached posterior spike of the distal tibial metaphysis, and (3) the tibial shaft with the proximal metaphysis and anteromedial epiphysis.

The undisputed masters of the Sopwith Triplane were the pilots of the all Canadian "Black Flight," commanded by Raymond Collishaw.
The nimble triplane must have held incredible appeal for a virtuoso pilot such as Richthofen, and with his forces suddenly facing a superior aircraft it is not surprising that he pressed the Idflieg to provide a similar aircraft.
Richthofen had two quick victories in his triplane, but on September 15th he lent it to Kurt Wolff, the commander of Jasta 11, who was shot down by a Sopwith Camel of the Black Flight.

The Sopwith Triplane - Great Britain
The Triplane was an instant success, and no time was lost in testing it in action, for it was sent up on an interception within a quarter of an hour of its arrival at Furnes.
Some difficulty was found in obtaining spares for the Triplane during the summer of 1917, and one unit, Naval one, had to reduce its establishment from eighteen to fifteen aeroplanes.
The first Triplane squadrons to begin re-equipment with Camels were No. 8 (Naval), which had received a few Camels by the end of July, 1917, and No. 9 (Naval), which exchanged its Triplanes and Pups for Camels between mid-July and August 4th.

  Fokker Triplane speech
The Fokker triplane was the first airplane to enter service with wooden cantilever wings.
Then triplanes were grounded for November while the wings were rebuilt, and December's weather was bad for flying.
One might suppose that with all the trouble the triplanes had from the very beginning, and especially considering how difficult they were to fly, that nobody wanted them.

The wings for the triplane are made with a wooden frame and covered with fibreglass or plywood.
The triplane flew hands off on the first flight with no changes required in trim and it is very stable in pitch.

It had triplane wings and tailplane and was grossly underpowered by a 9hp JAP engine driving a 9ft, 4 blade propeller via a belt reduction.
The final version was a Triplane 4, completed in September 1910 powered by a 35hp, 4 cylinder, water cooled, Green engine.

triplane | | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
A triplane is a fixed-wing aircraft equipped with three sets of wings, each roughly the same size and mounted one above the other.
The first triplane was designed in 1908 by Ambroise Goupy and built by Blériot, flown with a 37 kW (50 hp) Renault engine.
Triplane configurations have greater wing area than biplanes and monoplanes of similar wing span and chord, potentially offering increased lift and tighter turning radii.

 Triplane Madness
Study of this era of aviation shows that most firms that were engaged in aeroplane production tried at least one triplane design and some just couldn't seem to let go of the idea (Euler for instance).
A few were found to be good, most were discovered to be inadequate and a few were downright tragic(as with the Tarrant-Tabor).
There are a number of additional Triplanes of this era of which I am aware but have been unable to locate any pictures of.

Sopwith Triplane - Great War Forum
As I understand it the Sopwith Triplane was the original with the concept copied by others, notably Anthony Fokker and the DrI, and presumably a plane favoured by many German pilots including Manfred von Richtoften, because of the agility the triplane had in flight.
Although the Triplane was very successful during its brief service with the RNAS by late 1917 it was probably appreciated that aircraft like the Camel with two synchronised guns firing forward provided a decided advantage as the time allowed for hitting an opponent became ever shorter.
The triplane was originally intended to have the AR1 (Bentley) rotary and twin vickers guns.

Richthofen prefered the triplane design over contemporary ones in the end of his career for the simple values maintained in the rate-of-climb and turning ability of the aircraft.
The Fokker Dr.I (the "Dr" standing for "Dreidecker" which meant triplane) was initially developed to counter the Sopwith Triplane that appeared to have an advantage over certain types of German craft.
Most triplanes were then called on the defensive near or in Germany, which ultimately would fall to the Allied victories.

In the hands of naval pilots, the 'Tripehound' worked wonders and became so well liked that the pilots were reluctant to part with them when the replacement Camels arrived later in the year.

Several of the Royal Naval Air Squadron pilots scored many victories while flying the type and it made such a profound impression on the Germans that a specific request was made to their aircraft manufacturers to design and produce triplane fighters.
The triplane concept had a brief life and in less than two years it had been eclipsed by the new and more powerful biplane fighters on both sides.

The wings and struts of the Jenny, Camel and Triplane really stiffen up the whole structure, and those short noses are good for buckling strength as well.
