Triplanetary by E. E. "Doc" Smith
The secret history of Earth is that an Eddorian agent called Gharlane is behind most of the disasters that have befallen human civilization: the fall of Atlantis; the destruction of Rome; the loss of Western Civilization during an atomic war of the late 20th century.
Triplanetary's spy-rays, ultra-beams and Rodebush-Cleveland neutralizers are jibberishy precursors of Star Trek's phasers, trilithium crystals and subspace buffer arrays.
And all this talk of ancient beings waging a secret war and engaging in eugenic control of the younger races is recognizably an inspiration for Babylon 5's Shadow/Vorlon conflict.

For example, the rate at which technology is turned around by the Triplanetary League as well as their foes is simply absurd.

Re-Review-Triplanetary: A Tale of Cosmic Adventure
Triplanetary: A Tale of Cosmic Adventure was a book released by Fantasy Press in 1948 from a series of short stories published in Amazing Stories from January to April of 1934, with filler material to tie it together for the final book form.
Triplanetary is staged into three parts, the first taking us back millions of years to a time when two galaxies came together and formed what is now the Milky Way galaxy.
With Triplanetary we have a book that inspired others to follow with their own space sagas, but sadly the book tends to drag and in spots it is hard to follow.

Triplanetary by E. E. ''Doc'' Smith - Free eBook
"Triplanetary" was the first of six books in the Lensman series, and provided the background and the setting.
Their arrival has been detected by an even more ancient race known as the Arisians, who are native to our cosmos.
To fight Eddore, Arisia grooms humanity to form first the Triplanetary Service, and later the Galactic Patrol, as the instrument by which Civilization will be spread through the galaxy and counter the efforts of Eddore.

 Classic Sci-Fi Reviews: Triplanetary
The Arisians saw right away that the Eddorians were bent on subjugating all life in the universe, and they also knew that they themselves could not ultimately destroy the Eddorian threat.
Eventually, when a particular species reaches a certain stage of development, the Arisians will step into the limelight to prevent the Eddorians from interfering, giving that species the leeway it needs to grow into the race that will one day destroy the Eddorians.
"Triplanetary" picks up the tale at this point, detailing the creation of the Triplanetary Service, an organization of men and women who will one day form the great Galactic Patrol.

Because it's apparently regarded as one of the great space operas of all time, a magazine serial collected into book form in the 40s that served as the inspiration for everything from the Green Lantern Corps to Star Wars.
And sure enough, Triplanetary is goofy fun, but not all that great, most of the way through.
The basic concept is that the Arrisians (good) and the Eddorians (bad) have been manipulating the entire universe in a secretive galactic struggle for dominance, occassionally collapsing empires like Atlantic and Rome in Ra's Al Ghulian display of sheer evil and/or hope for the future, depending on which race you're listening to.

 Don Harlow reviews The Lensmen
Centuries after the end of the World Wars, the solar system is (mostly) united under the single Triplanetary (Earth-Mars-Venus) government, and all is well — except for the space pirates.
Triplanetary introduces us to those who will become the first generation of Lensmen.
Most of the rest of the story is an introduction to Civilization’s battle against the two branches of crime — piracy and drug-running — which are to be the major problems in the future.

Triplanetary and First Lensman by E. E. Smith   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Parts of "Triplanetary" originally appeared as short stories in the legendary sci-fi magazine Amazing Stories in 1934, and, together with some new material, they were published as the book "Triplanetary" by Fantasy Press in 1948.
The Lensman saga was originally only four books long, but Smith retrofitted both "Triplanetary" and "First Lensman" to the series in order to tell the background of his sweeping epic.
In "Triplanetary," a series of vignettes spanning millions of years explains how the titanic struggle between the good Arisians and the evil Eddorians first came to pass, and about how humanity was chosen (and bred) to assume the awesome power of the lens.

In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, the two first novels in the series, 'Triplanetary' and 'First Lensman', are often preferred to the rest of the series.
After the historical sequences, 'Triplanetary' concentrates on Costigan's struggles against an inhuman (in both senses of the word) space-pirate, Gray Roger, and the strange amphibious Nevians: the lens (the psycho-energetic transducer that becomes civilisation's principal weapon) does not appear until the second novel, 'First Lensman'.
This novel glues 'Triplanetary' to the rest of the series with the introduction of the lens and the formation and early struggles of the Galactic Patrol.

First, "Triplanetary", while chronologically first, is actually a "fix-up" novel that Doc retconned into the series.
Nothing wrong with it, in my view -- I actually like it a great deal -- but a purist would start with "Galactic Patrol" and pretend he knew nothing of the backstory, because in the original published version there was NO prologue explaining what was going on.
Triplanetary is probabaly one of my least favourite Lensman books and my enjoyment of the series is probably helped by the fact that I read the rest first.

Triplanetary (which by the way stands for the inner planet confederation of Earth, Venus, and Mars) starts out with the Eddorians disappointment in early Earth's progress as a sufficient slave race (due to subtle interference by the Arisians), and thus is the cause of large disasters in humanities past as a form of punishment.
