When Germany and Austria-Hungary found themselves at war in August 1914 with the rival Triple Entente of Britain, France and the latter's ally Russia, Italy pledged their support, but subsequently entering the conflict on the side of the Entente against Austria-Hungary in May 1915 and Germany in August 1916 (see World War I).

Negotiated and signed in May 1881, the Triple Alliance brought Italy into the alliance previously agreed between Germany and Austria-Hungary (in 1879) as a counterweight to France and Russia.
One of the chief aims of the Triple Alliance was to prevent Italy from declaring war against Austria-Hungary, towards whom the Italians were in constant dispute over territorial matters.
Although regularly renewed up until the outbreak of war in 1915, the Triple Alliance was essentially ineffective with regard to Italy’s participation, for in 1902 (just five months after the latest renewal of the Alliance) Italy reached an understanding with France that each would remain neutral in the event of an attack upon the other.

DP W2002A: AIRhead Alliance vs. SWAT
In the Summer 2000 issue of Diplomacy World, Mark Fassio began a discussion on the possible development of another triple alliance of Austria, Italy and Russia (AIR) and his idea of an overwhelming opening blow against the west which he sees as coming from the moves to Bohemia, Tyrolia and Silesia in Spring 01.
With any triple the key is to make sure that the game does not come down in the opening to 3 vs 4, which is the current very real danger of the Swat opening since it is an "In Your Face" alliance that will inspire the other players to stop it.
The other issue that is rather eloquent in the alliance structure is that when done right, there are no stalemate lines between the three powers so that it is truly a strategic and diplomatic feat to balance to the end and pull it off.
