Ludwig van Beethoven - Triple Concerto   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Beethoven's Triple Concerto is a hybrid of the rich harmonies of the early Romantic Era and the delicate precision of the Baroque concerto grosso.
Beethoven, too, wrote mostly solo concerti, with this one exception, in which he seems to flash back to his early studies of Handel's compositions.
The solo group in the Triple Concerto is comprised of a piano, a violin, and a cello.

  Saint Louis Symphony
Beethoven was born in Bonn on December 16, 1770, and died in Vienna on March 26, 1827.
Or perhaps Beethoven envisioned the augmented solo contingent as a way to expand further the expressive possibilities of the concerto form, an effort that was among his chief compositional concerns during the first decade of the nineteenth century.
Beethoven’s resort to this rhythm is only slightly less obsessive than his use of the famous four-note figure in the first movement of his Fifth Symphony, and the motif serves the same end of giving cohesion to a large span of music that ranges over a wide harmonic terrain.

Beethoven’s 1804 Triple Concerto remains the oddity among his great concerted works, a kind of throwback to the Baroque concerto grosso format, using a piano trio as the concertino.
Beethoven solved the textural intricacies of such a large concept by assigning the cello the lead entries in every thematic statement, to be followed invariably by the violin and piano.
Beethoven’s 1799 Septet, as opposed to its oddly-paired Concerto, remains one of his most popular works; even its premier was marked by success.

Beethoven's music is ideally suited to the Eroica Trio's vigorous style, and, for this release, the group has chosen two works that offer ample opportunities to flex its musical muscles--the Triple Concerto and the Opus 11 trio.
The Triple Concerto is a study of contrasts and textures, an exploration by the composer of all the possibilities available through various instrumental, thematic, and harmonic combinations.
Beethoven originally composed his Opus 11 trio for clarinet, cello, and piano, but later created a version for the standard piano trio instrumentation.

As much as I love the Beethoven concerto, the Brahms "Double" is the winner for me...it gets me in its opening bars of a strong motif, the passionate "conversation" between cello and violin, to come back forcefully to the motif, and it never lets up that intensity for its duration.

More performances needed of Beethoven Triple Concerto op. 56 - 1803
Beethoven wrote at least eight trios for Violin, Piano, and Orchestra, of which the Archduke Trio opus 97, is probably the bewt known and most frequently performed.
The Beethoven "triple" concerto for Violin, Piano, and Violoncello opus 56, was completed 1803 just before the period of his maximum fame.
I think that another reason it is not often performed is that critics over the years have considered it not up to Beethoven standards, particularly the piano part which was composed for one of Beethoven's patrons to play and is supposedly not very difficult.

The old joke says that not all of a genius’ masterpieces are equal, and that Beethoven’s ‘Triple Concerto’ is the most unequal piece in his catalogue.
But Beethoven’s ‘Seventh’ is a different beast entirely, written for much smaller orchestra, with its excitement coming not from large orchestral pyrotechnics but from the frolicking interplay of instrumental sections.
In the ‘Triple Concerto’, the engineering is especially impressive, because it avoids the two pitfalls of multichannel recording with soloists.
