The trio's first two albums each sold a few thousand copies, their gigs in mid-size pubs pulled in reasonable numbers and songs such as Gough (1993) and I Make Hamburgers (1996) had the right mix of levity and low-key pop to garner Triple J airplay.
It was eventually voted number one on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1997, sold more than 80,000 copies on its own and sent sales of the Whitlams' third album, Eternal Nightcap, past 200,000 - the sort of figures rarely reached by local acts and never by independent artists.
Those sales figures (and lack of radio play) were repeated for the last album, Love This City and the connections made with a vast audience by constant touring were reaping their own rewards.
