triple j's hottest 100 is one of the largest public music polls in the world with millions of individual votes counted since it's inception in 1989.
Originally listeners were asked to compile a list of their favourite songs of all time and mail them to triple j.
The focus of the hottest 100 changed after these early years limiting the voting selection to songs released in the previous 12 months.

The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual top 100 list, based on the votes of Australian youth radio station Triple J listeners, in order to determine their favourite song of the year.
The poll had been conducted by 2JJJ in Sydney starting in the 1980s, before Triple J became a national broadcaster.
Triple J was legally required to change the name of its annual survey.

This recording yielded their first major radio airplay with the song From Here On In, which was placed on high rotation on the youth radio network Triple J.
Shortly after the release of the second EP, drummer Joe Piripitzi left the band for reasons unclear, and was replaced with Travis Demsey who was soon playing with the band at major festivals such as Pushover and the Falls Festival.
During this period 6 singles were released including the previously stated double A-side, and in addition 'Tainted Love (live)', a cover, was released as a radio-only single on Triple J. The Living End's breakout was the most successful part of their career so far.
