  Vox populi - Music - www.theage.com.au
Truth is, I haven't listened to Triple J regularly for many years - but their Hottest 100 is a cultural phenomenon, democratic touchstone and reliable indicator of what's what in music, more so than anything happening on any other radio station.
The thing with the Hottest 100, it could be argued, is that it is probably more truthful than the actual ARIA charts, which, like any "official" music chart, suffer from persistent accusations of unreliability.
Charts are basically a celebration of song - singles - and Triple J's Hottest 100 is all about individual songs, which are, and always were, the essence of pop, in which, according to critic Simon Frith, songs are written for public consumption, or public use, not for any deep form of self-expression or authenticity.

Here in Australia is a hugely popular nation-wide radio station called Triple J, whose main focus is on alternative music.
Each year since 1989 they have run a poll called the Hottest 100 to determine which are the best 100 songs released this year.
Soon after, a CD is released featuring around 36 of the winners, and the 100 video clips from the winners are also shown on the music program "Rage", rather ironically on the government run TV network (who also happen to own Triple J).

Probably unnoticed up north, a really significant aspects of the July 2, 2000 vote was the fact that, for the first time in modern Mexico, clergy were allowed to vote.
Back in 1988 when the outcome of the national vote was reported to favor Salinas, much of our press, if it mentioned it at all, indulged in pious analyses of the Mexican electoral system, endlessly repeating the dubious charge that the perpetually sour-looking Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas had been deprived of victory by fraud.
