Conjunctions, or what seem to be close approaches of planets in the sky, are common occurrences; they take place at periodic intervals as the planets orbit the sun at differing angular velocities.
Another source believes that in the third week of June in the year 2 B.C. there was the first conjunction of Jupiter, and Venus in the constellation of Leo, near the bright star of Regulus at the front foot of the Lion, in the early evening, just after sundown.
Although it should be obvious to the magi that this was a conjunction, whether they gauged it as a sign to trek hundreds of miles is up for option.

Just to show how common Venus-Jupiter conjunctions are though, you can find just the observable conjunctions (that is, those that happen at least 15 degrees away from the Sun in the sky) from 1980-2020, ordered by date here, or by minimum separation between the planets here.
In 1976 David Hughes popularised this triple conjunction and suggested that it might explain the Star of Bethlehem, particularly as it happened in the constellation of Pisces, a constellation associated with the Jews.
Similarly, triple conjunctions were seen in Pisces in 861/860 BC and in 981/980 BC, during both of which the separation of Jupiter and Saturn was less than in 7 BC.
