 The Evolution of Compound Locomotives
It was not until twenty-one years after the Nicholson engines were put in service that the triple-expansion marine engine, which soon led to the quadruple-expansion type, was patented.
Compounding on any considerable scale came relatively late in the United States, largely because the 4-4-0, or "American type," was so popular that engineers were loth to abandon an old and tried favourite, and therefore endeavoured to give it greater and greater power.
Nicholson's system, which was employed on two locomotives, converted from "simple" working, differed from the general principle subsequently adopted in locomotive compounding in that it made use of what was termed "continuous expansion." the steam being finally exhausted in both the high- and low-pressure cylinders.

The Turbinia - Spithead Review 1897
As an instance of this it may be stated that in the Turbinia's engines the steam is expanded 170-fold as against 16-fold in ordinary triple expansion marine engines.
This remarkable performance is due to the fact that, in place of being fitted with the ordinary marine type of reciprocating engine, she has her motive power supplied by three steam turbines of the type invented by the Hon.
Attached to the inner surface of the case are a number of rows of inwardly projecting blades, which extend radially towards the axis of tile engine.
