A birding tripod is a compromise of weight versus stability, and between compactness and height.
Experienced birders look for compact, easy to transport tripods that are tall enough for comfort during extended use and have independently adjustable legs for uneven terrain.
Bogen tripods and tripod heads provide stability and resistance to wind vibration and are popular with experienced birders as well as those seeking top quality camera tripods.

For quality tripods you almost always have to find a large store in a metropolitan area or shop over the Internet at a place such as B and H Photo Video.
Tripods and monopods almost always have a threaded screw sticking through the top platform that you use to attach a camera, head, or quick release system.
The problem is cameras and tripods occasionally have different connectors; a 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 (the fraction is the diameter and the whole number is the number of threads per inch).

Gitzo tripods are quite stiff to spread apart compared to Manfrotto tripods but this is a good thing actually, as you do not want a tripod to be easily splayed or compacted, especially when heavy loads on sitting atop of it.
Gitzo tripods require the user to pull a tab outward to spread the legs apart and this is not exactly the easiest thing to do even in warm weather without gloves on your hands.
My educated guess about wood tripods is that they act similarly to channel or tune vibration from the camera equipment to the tripod and ultimately to an even more massive entity, the ground the tripod is sitting on.

Adapted from the first two books in John Christopher's "Tripods" trilogy, the show frustratingly failed to deliver the final story that winds everything up.
Watched at a sitting, it seems padded and the three lead actors are variable, but taken in single-episode chunks it works quite well, with a subtly unsettling depiction of a backward world where everyone seems happy but actually isn't and actual villainy comes as a relief amidst the overwhelming niceness.
