Tripod (The War of the Worlds) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wells' classic science fiction novel The War of the Worlds (as well as subsequent films, radio shows and television series based on the original), a Tripod or "Fighting Machine" is a type of fictional three-legged walker used by inhabitants of Mars to colonize Earth.
There are several differences between the tripods as described in Wells' book and those in Steven Spielberg's 2005 movie, which come from an undisclosed planet; the movie tripods did not possess the black smoke and had some type of invisible energy shield which becomes visible when hit by a missile or other projectile.
The tripods were equipped with tentacles for capturing humans (and two cages for holding the humans when they are not being dragged to their sacrifice) as well as a probe to search abandoned buildings and locations where the tripods cannot get in.

War of the Worlds Review :: Hollywood.com
From the beginning of the Tripod war machines' reigning terror, disintegrating poor souls with their heat rays or snatching them up in the air with their tentacle extensions (to use for a very gruesome task indeed), it's shockingly realistic.
All you can really say about War of the Worlds is: a) thank goodness Steven Spielberg has had a lifelong obsession for aliens great and small and b) he has the fortitude and talent to make an invasion by them scary, intense, and so damn real.
"War of the Worlds is a Hollywood fireworks display cut short.

Locus Online: Gary Westfahl reviews War of the Worlds
It is difficult to determine whether the creative forces behind War of the Worlds — director Steven Spielberg and writers Josh Friedman and David Koepp — ever saw themselves in the insidious aliens and machines of their story, but arguably there are telling signs.
The enormous tripods of the Hollywood film industry are invading again, devastating the media landscape and driving hordes of people out of their homes and into their neighborhood movie theatres.
Its tripods are rendered almost precisely as Wells described them, as is the evocative red weed that spreads over the landscape to mark the triumph of the Martians.

 War of the Worlds
War of the Worlds is darker and scarier than most of Spielberg's work, especially his sci-fi work.
Based on H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi work, Steven Spielberg's version of War of the Worlds sticks to the story of desperate dad Ray as he tries to protect his son and daughter from the massive destruction of an alien invasion.
From the devastating "tripod" alien war machines to the exoskeletal aliens themselves, the eye-popping visual effects are pure 21st century.

WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005) - WIDESCREEN DVD
War of the Worlds is a work of obvious genius that is about nothing, which is an amazing and disheartening thing to say because so much of the picture is composed of jaw-dropping--I mean it, it's astonishing--Holocaust tableaux mixed with 9/11 imagery.

What looks like a spaceship then emerges from the crater, but it's really the main top section of what turns out to be a towering, alien "tripod" war machine.
As this towering, three-legged "tripod" continues its path of destruction, Ray races home, gathers up his kids and takes the only working vehicle in town as their means of escape.
A tripod then slowly emerges from the water, causing the ferry to turn sideways, dumping people and cars into the water (with the latter nearly hitting the former as they jump off).

 Fringe: War of the Worlds
War of the Worlds is unlikely to scare people out of the water (or theatres) like Jaws did (though Tom Cruise's latest publicity antics might), but it's sure to attract crowds, and for the simple fact that it offers us a chance to be voyeurs to an apocalypse of sorts.
Or so it would seem, if the first thirty minutes of War of the Worlds is any indication.
What begins is the most astonishing series of events, culminating in the emergence of huge tripod machines, which proceed to wipe out hapless tourists and residents with a "death ray", crushing cars and buildings, and generally making nuisances of themselves.

 War of the Worlds (2005)
This is the case with the 2005 War of the Worlds.
The one redeeming aspect of the new War of the Worlds is it was produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, a man of my generation with an appreciation for classic science fiction flick like this.
In most of the shots of the invading tripods the perspective has shifted from a third person view to one that is close to the ground, offering the audience a first hand view of what is going on.

"War of the Worlds" falters only when Spielberg goes in for the deep massage and the deeper message; those who find the filmmaker's optimism corny and convenient are not likely to appreciate the turn "War of the Worlds" takes to reach its final destination.
"War of the Worlds" is a big, clunky movie containing some sensational sights but lacking the zest and joyous energy we expect from Steven Spielberg.
All films about alien invasion derive, to some degree, from H.G. Wells' seminal 1898 book, "The War of the Worlds." We've seen the story so many times, either in official adaptations or knockoffs like "Independence Day," that a 2005 rendition needed to be pretty special to distinguish itself.

1953's The War of the Worlds is rightly revered by sci-fi mavens.
A colossal disappointment, given the talent involved behind and before the camera, Steven Spielberg's remake of War of the Worlds is an unwieldy hodgepodge of spectacular set pieces and sappy family drama.
There are extensive looks at the design of the tripod machines and the aliens themselves (which carry a bit of the slimy post-Alien H.R Giger look), complete with 3-D computer models of the nasty critters.

 War of the Worlds (2005)
from Belleville, NJ "War of the Worlds" is Steven Spielberg's third movie in which extraterrestrials visit Earth, but the first in which their intentions are malevolent.
And in fact the "war" of the title is waged from the beginning--it's just not on the level of humans vs. aliens combat that some viewers apparently were expecting.
That Spielberg uses imagery alluding to 9/11, the Holocaust, and perhaps the siege of London during World War II is, for me, less an exploitation than a reflection of how seriously he intends the audience to take the on screen mayhem.
