Tripoli (population 1 million, Arabic: Ţarabulus) is the capital of Libya.
The Ottoman province (vilayet) of Tripoli (including the dependent 'sanjak' of Cyrenaica) lay along the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea between Tunisia in the west and Egypt in the east.
From the Phoenicians Tripoli passed into the hands of the rulers of Cyrenaica (Barca), from whom it was wrested by the Carthaginians.
