  How was the tritone used?
However, at least by the epoch of Perotin and his successors, while the tritone was typically classified in the 13th century as a "perfect discord" (along with m2 and M7), it nevertheless occurs, as do these intervals, quite frequently and prominently in practice.
Indeed, there are many 13th-century cadences where the tritone serves basically as a "counterfeit fourth or fifth," and Boen suggests that similar progressions may sometimes have occurred in the 14th century as well.
In a medieval context, where fifths and fourths are the most complex stable intervals, the tritone is unique among the usual intervals in neither being itself stable, nor in being to resolve to any stable interval by conjunct contrary motion: compare 2-4, 3-1 or 3-5, 6-8 or 6-4, and 7-5.

  Neptune's Moon Triton
Triton is the only large satellite in the solar system to circle a planet in a retrograde direction -- in a direction opposite to the rotation of the planet.
Triton appears to be roughly 10% darker than in images taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft.
With Triton's long seasons, the southern summer has been progressing, and the south pole has received increasing sunlight; thus, it is probable that much of the frost covering the region in 1989 has evaporated, some of which may have condensed at the equator (hence the bright region there).

Tritone substitution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In jazz music, a tritone substitution is the use in a chord progression of a dominant seventh chord (major/minor seventh chord) that is three steps (a tritone) away from the original dominant seventh chord.
Thus, the alt chord is equivalent to the tritone substitution with a sharp eleven alteration.
Tritone substitutions are a common technique in jazz and were first used by musicians such as Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge and Benny Goodman.

Tritone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tritone occurs naturally between the 4th and 7th scale degrees of the major scale (for example, in C major F to B), and depending on which of the two notes occurs in the bass, it is either an augmented 4th, or a diminished 5th.
In jazz harmony, the tritone is both part of the dominant chord and its substitute dominant (also known as the sub V chord).
The tritone is also used throughout Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, as an ironic "point of reference" despite the tone's inherent instability, thereby offering subtle commentary on the nature of war itself.

 Tritone Paradox and Spectral-Motion AfterEffects
The tones used to create the tritone paradox were synthesized by Diana Deutsch at the University of California - San Diego.
The tones used in the tritone paradox have 6 components (octaves) and are presented through a bell-shaped spectral envelope (see Figure to the left).
It is the perception of the half-octave intervals (e.g., C-F#) that serves as the basis for the tritone paradox.

 GuitarPeople.com - Lessons
In the second set of intervals in example I is the same tritone, but with the two notes reversed, so that the seventh is on the bottom, and the third is on the top of the G7 dominant chord.
This resolution demands moving in the opposite direction from the way we handled the earlier tritone, with the two notes moving outward, the F down a half-step to E, and the B upwards to C, forming a C chord in first inversion.
Again, the difference between the two is that I have reversed the tritone, putting the seventh of A, which is G, in the bass, and putting its third, which is Cs, in the melody.

Deutsch tritone paradox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Deutsch tritone paradox is an auditory illusion created by Diana Deutsch (creator of a number of auditory illusions) to test the Shepard scale if proximity information was removed.
Thus two Shepard tones exactly half an octave apart, a tritone, are played.
Diana Deutsch found that perception of which tone was higher was dependent on the absolute frequencies involved: one will consistently find the same tone as higher or lower, and this is determined by the tones' absolute pitch.

 Tritone Substitutes Chords (b5 Substitutes)
A dominant 7th chord is characterised by the tension set up in the tritone interval between the 3rd and the 7th, which has a tendency to resolve to the root and 3rd of the tonic (ex 8a).
In jazz this has become known as the b5 (or tritone) substitute and in practical use the dominant chord whose root is a b5 away from a dominant can be used as a substitute, whether or not its 5th is flattened.
Because of the tritone the two most important notes of any dominant chord are the 3rd and 7th, (Apart from the root which obviously defines the root of the chord).

Meet My Friend Mr. Tritone | Guitar Columns @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
The tritone forms between the 3rd and the flatted 7th of the G in the G7 chord (the 3rd of a G is a B, the b7th is an F, and the distance between those two notes forms a tritone).
The tritone is traditionally considered dissonance, though it is not as dissonant as the second or seventh.
Because the tritone is exactly in the middle of the major scale, if you invert the interval in the dominant chord (the 3rd to 7th) then you get a new chord which you use.

 On Modes, by Jody Nagel
It is convenient to label the various possible tritone relationships with respect to a given "tonic-dominant" perfect fifth based on the name of the mode that ordinarily contains that tritone.
Thus, relative to a C-G perfect fifth, the pitch classes B and F constitute the "Ionian Tritone." Again relative to a C-G perfect fifth, the pitch classes Eb and A constitute the "Dorian Tritone." The named tritones are each shown in Example 1.
If, however, one were to place this structure in the context of a neighborhood whereby one of the walls of the house suddenly "faced the street," then, by that context, one could say that the "front" of the house was the side which faced the street.

Rome by Thais- Fontana del Tritone
Between the dophins' tails which support the shell on which the Triton crouches, Bernini placed two coats of arms of the Barberini family.
The Triton which blows in the shell pushes out a jet of water, which, falling on the valves which direct it into the basin below, creates an incredibly choreographic effect.
Il tritone che soffia con impeto in una conchiglia fa uscire il getto d'acqua che, ricadendo nelle valve e poi dalle scannellature di queste nella vasca sottostante, crea una coreografia di grande effetto.
