Triumph Acclaim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Triumph Acclaim was a compact automobile made by BL Ltd., the successor to British Leyland, from 1981 to 1984.
All Acclaims were powered by the 1,335 cm³ engine found in the Honda Civic and the interior was nearly identical (except for the seats).
The Acclaim replaced the Triumph Dolomite of the 1970s and was succeeded by the first Rover 200-series, based on the Honda Civic.

Triumph Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
But many Triumphs of this era were unreliable, including the 2.5 PI with its fuel injection problems, and the poor quality of the TR7 and TR8 sports cars, which killed the marque in the United States.
The last Triumph model was the Acclaim which was launched in 1981 in a joint venture with Japanese company Honda.
The Triumph name disappeared in 1984, when the Acclaim was replaced by the Rover 200, which was also simply a rebadged version of Honda's Civic/Ballade model.

 Acclaim development story
The view within the company was that the this car, to be marketed as the Triumph Acclaim, was so complimentary, that it would not steal sales from the Metro or the LM10, both hatchbacks and that it could be regarded as much more than the stopgap it initially was intended to be.
The Acclaim was marketed as a replacement for the Dolomite, but marketing strategists knew that as the Ital and the Allegro were fading in the market, potential customers would look at the Acclaim as a natural alternative instead of the competition.
The “Edwardes letter” aside, the lead-up to the Acclaim's launch was very quiet and it failed to grab the public's attention in the way that the Metros had.

 Rover 213/216 development story
And that shows clearly that we’re making good progress.” Where the Triumph Acclaim was let down, was that it was seen as being out on a limb and out of step with the rest of the range and therefore, somewhat difficult to market.
Unlike the Triumph Acclaim, it was clear that there was room to develop the new car modestly — and the first step was to develop their version of the car to accept the forthcoming S-Series engine.
The Acclaim was never particularly a big success as a company car — 26 per cent of the sales of this model were sales to the fleets — an unusually low number for a “British” mid-sized car.

The product of a deal made in 1979 between BL Cars and the Japanese firm of Honda, the Triumph Acclaim was essentially a Honda model (known overseas as the Honda Ballade).
The Acclaim was assembled at Cowley although some of it was British sourced and constructed (the interior trim, for instance).
Intended primarily as a stop-gap vehicle between the Dolomite and the new generation Maestro range, the competent little Acclaim was produced only between 1982 and 1984 and was the last BL car to bear the Triumph name.
