Motorcycle Online: Munich Show: 2001 Triumph Bonneville
I think owning the Bonneville at such a tender age, and the memories of all the fun I had on it are the reasons I am still riding a motorcycle today.
The original T120 Bonneville was launched in 1959 as a high-performance, dual-carburetor version of Triumph's existing 650cc twin and named after the record-breaking feats on the Bonneville Salt Flats by Johnny Allen.
From the outset, Triumph's intention with the Bonneville was to produce a machine that combined the old model's timeless appeal with modern technology.

 TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE
The 2001 Triumph Bonneville was perhaps the most awaited bike of the year; the re-introduction of one of motorcycling's most famous models.
The new Bonneville is not a clone or copy of its famous namesake, but rather a modern motorcycle designed to fill the void created by the demise of its illustrious predecessor.
Triumph finally got a front fender right; this handsome example is a copy of the style used on the 1969 Bonneville, chrome struts and all.

Triumph's 790cc interpretation of the 360-degree vertical-twin is a genuinely functional interpretation of kith and kin.
Flopping the five-speed gearbox (essentially a Triumph Triple's six-speeder with the fifth cog missing) moves the clutch to the left side, allowing the final drive and compulsory triangular engine cover to live on the right.

Triumph's positioning for this bike was "entry-level." New, returning and smaller riders are their market, and they have succeeded.
As for the 2001 Bonneville, I attribute the hesitation to the constrained jetting required to pass the strict EPA regulations.
In the late 1950's a Triumph Tiger with a twin-carb head set the land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats and later came to be known as the Triumph Bonneville.

Motorcycle Cruiser magazine Triumph Bonneville America test
When the new Triumph motorcycle company hit the road a decade ago, it rode in on sporting-oriented bikes, which permitted the new firm to demonstrate that it could play in the same high-tech game as its Asian competitors.
That bike, the Bonneville, not only captured the style and appeal of its 1960s counterpart, it was powered by an air-cooled vertical twin like the original, though the completely new engine was bigger and more modern.
The biggest internal change is a switch from the Bonneville's 360-degree crankshaft arrangement (where the pistons go up and down together, alternating power strokes) to a 270-dgeree crankshaft (where the rods are set 270 degrees apart on the crankshaft) to change to sound and feel of the engine.

Conceived in the 1950s, the Triumph Bonneville has stood the test of time, and still looks and performs like one of the best motorcycles on the road.
Triumph were still producing the motorcycles some 40 years after the first model was produced, and the success story doesn't look set to run out of gas anytime soon.
For viewers enthralled by the smell of gasoline, the scent of burning rubber on tarmac, and the thrill of the open road, the Triumph Boneville is an enduring, and reliable, legend.

I call it a sport standard, because I regard it as the modern equivalent of a Triumph Bonneville or BSA Lightning, which were sportier versions of standard Triumph and BSA motorcycles of the past.
Triumph offers some accessories for the Sport, among which is an ugly fly screen, which I strongly advise against.
In an impromptu race down a winding country lane, the Triumph might have a slight advantage, although its (presumed) ability to carry a little more speed into the corners would be largely negated by the Sportster's acceleration out of the corners.

Through the last twenty-five years of the original company's life, the mainstay of the business was the Bonneville, a 650cc (later 750cc) twin-cylinder, four-stroke motorcycle, based on a design originally penned in 1937, shrouded in glory in the late fifties, when the world speed record was set with a heavily modified Triumph twin, at Bonneville.
Largely on the basis of styling (the Bonneville was always a beautiful bike) and because there wasn't anything better until Honda came along and dragged the motorcycle industry out of the Victorian era, The Bonnie kept Triumph afloat (but drifting) until 1983.
To be fair to the crew at Triumph, they've managed to replicate a lot of the feel of the old bike, at least in the comfort department.

Over the years the Bonneville was also raced very successfully all over the world, notably in the Isle of Man. John Hartle won the first Production TT on a Bonnie in 1967; two years later, Malcolm Uphill set the first 100mph (160.9km/h) lap of the Island en route to another victory.

Now Triumph has added another layer to the basic experience with a fully-equipped road-burner in the racy style of the sixties speedster – the T100.
Built on the timeless lines of the Bonneville, but sporting the twin top-yoke-mounted instruments that true traditionalists crave, the T100 also features rubber knee-grips on a two-tone finished fuel tank.
Powered by the same specification engine as the more basic Bonneville and running the same sweet-handling chassis, the T100 expands the massively popular Triumph twin range yet further and adds another distinctive styling option for the discerning rider.

The Bonneville is perhaps the very essence to many people of what motorcycling is about – a relatively simple machine but one that provides maximum rider enjoyment and involvement.
However some want a little more than the basic package and for this reason, and with a further nod to the past, the T100 (so called in honour of the legendary ’60s speedster) exists for those that want that little bit extra.
But the T100, with its tachometer, rubber knee grips on the tank and chromed engine covers, is the very essence of style and individuality just as it was 40 years’ ago.
