  Triumph Dolomite - Biocrawler
The car was originally a 1300 cm³ with front wheel drive (FWD), but Triumph were dissatisfied with the cost, performance and sales of the FWD car; accordingly, it was re-engineered in 1970 as the Triumph Toledo, a cheaper and more basic variant with conventional rear wheel drive which was made alongside the FWD version.
Triumph needed to rationalise the range, and they did this by introducing the Dolomite 1300 and 1500 in 1976.
The Dolomite Sprint was the choice of transportation for television's Bodie in The Professionals, for the first half of the first season, before it was replaced by a Ford Capri.

Triumph were increasingly turning their attention to the ever expanding fleet market, particularly the satisfying of those lower and middle management levels which started with the car as a perk, often the employer's substitute for real and regular salary progression.
Dolomite production ceased in August '80 and sadly 1980 was also the year we said our farewells to the marque Triumph.

Triumph was making a name for itself with its sports cars across the Atlantic, so in 1957, the Standard Ten saloon was marketed in the U.S. as a Triumph TR10, clearly borrowing some of the newly won reputation of the Triumph marque.
The solution of the Triumph engineers was both effective and cheap: just the bottom leaf of the assembly remained fixed to the differential casing, but the others were free to pivot around a central axis.
But many Triumphs of this era were unreliable, including the 2500 PI with its fuel injection problems, and the poor quality of the TR7 and TR8 sports cars, which killed the marque in the United States.

Triumph Dolomite Sprint Vs BMW 2002 - Car Forums and Automotive Chat
All the race prepped Dolomites I know of have usualy had the diff replaced with a Ford Escort unit, and the engines can be tempramental, although they do have lots of potential to make good power.
The dolomite is the considerably better looking car (that red one is just horney), the 2002 was never all that pretty, unless in Turbo form with the extra chin spoiler.
While the 16 valve head on the Dolomite Sprint was very flash for its era, the block on which it was based, along with the rest of the car all used pretty much 50s and 60s technology.

This story follows the life of a white 1850 Dolomite imported into Australia in 1976 and bought by a sprightly 63 year old lady who kept the car for the next 29 years before deciding to "retire" from driving earlier this year at 92 years of age.
But to wrap up the Triumph story, the Dolomite was sadly the end of the road for the company as a carmaker.

The Triumph Dolomite had a very unusual gestation; for its basic body architecture started out as project 'Ajax', the front wheel drive Triumph 1300 of 1965.
Then Harry Webster and his design team at Triumph, ever unconventional in their product planning, re-engineered the basic shell and made it rear wheel drive in 1970, initially as the Toledo and then as the four door Dolomite.

autoclassic.com :: the history of classic cars : 1937 Triumph Dolomite Roadster
One feature of the new Dolomites in 1936 was their ‘waterfall’ style of radiator grille, which stylist Walter Belgrove had produced as an obvious inspiration from the latest Hudson Terraplanes.
Well trimmed and furnished, the Dolomite Roadster, which was produced in very limited numbers, was more ‘drop-head’ than ‘roadster’, and it was available in two forms: a four-cylinder 1,767 cc type, or a six-cylinder 1,991 cc model with a longer (and even more elegant) wheelbase.
Elegant by the standards of the day, it died at the outbreak of war, for post-war Triumphs were really modified Standards, and a new-generation Roadster was not nearly as smart as the original.

VWvortex Forums: Dolomite: The Triumph of Dare?
Triumph's long-standing tradition of (at least somewhat) sports-oriented sedans was upheld with cars like the smaller, separate-chassis Herald and Vitesse and the larger unitary six-cylinder 2000/2500- both of which lived quite long lives in the marketplace.
Somewhere in between, Triumph introduced the front-wheel drive 1300 in 1965, which was a reasonable success and was up-gunned to the 1500 in 1970.
To say that the Dolomite Sprint was special at the time, that it was something of a sensation, would be an understatement.
