  Triumph GT6
Contrary to belief, the GT6 was developed before the Le-Mans cars used the fastback body style and not the other way around - in fact they used the prototype fastbacks and even some gearbox components and other items were 'homologated'.
The rear suspension had in fact been modified for the GT6 and the company was seriously trying to find engineering time to concentrate on the problem.
This they eventually managed, and when, in 1968, the GT6 Mk2 took over,it was fitted with an advanced lower- wishbone rear suspension layout; double-jointed shafts located by a spring at the top.

 Triumph GT6
In fact only the GT6’s suspension was to come under fire, the swing-axle system carried over from the Spitfire, which in turn had been carried over from the Herald was not to everybody’s liking – but then even the svelte Mercedes SL Pagoda’s of the time were copping some criticism for their swing-axle set-up.
By 1968 the Triumph engineers had significantly re-engineered the swing-axle setup, and so the Mk2 was released (this model was known as the GT6+ in the US).
The GT6 was quietly dropped from the Triumph lineup at the end of 1973, with a handful of cars being sold the year after.

Rather, the Triumph GT6 Quaife ATB differential automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks.
The Triumph GT6 Quaife ATB differential has many benefits over a standard open differential, including maximising traction and minimizing wheelspin, eliminating torque steer and snatching in front wheel drive cars compared to conventional LSD units, and a maintenance-free design which retains the standard oil lubrication.
The Triumph GT6 Quaife ATB differential is proven in circuit and drag racing, rallying and road use, and is produced from Corus steel billets, and is CAD designed and CNC machined, then inspected to ISO 9001 standards.

Triumph was happy to develop this image for the new car, wanting it to be seen as an altogether more up-market model than the Spitfire.
Although the GT6 was an immediate sales success, there was criticism of the car's swing-axle rear suspension, and of the poor ventilation of the small cabin.
Major improvements to the roadholding could only be made by a complete re-design, so for the GT6 Mk2 Triumph abandoned the swing-axle system, substituting a new layout which kept the transverse leaf spring, but also used a reversed lower wishbone: wheel camber changes were much reduced.
