Topic: Triumph TR2

Triumph Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the early 1950's it was decided to use the Triumph name on sporting cars and the Standard name on saloons and in 1953 the Triumph TR2 was launched, the first of a series that would run through to 1981.
The Triumph name disappeared in 1984, when the Acclaim was replaced by the Rover 200, which was a rebadged version of Honda's Civic/Ballade model.
The use of the Triumph name as a trademark for vehicles is shared between BMW and Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. The former for automobiles and the latter for motorcycles.

Triumph was making a name for itself with its sports cars across the Atlantic, so in 1957, the Standard Ten saloon was marketed in the U.S. as a Triumph TR10, clearly borrowing some of the newly won reputation of the Triumph marque.
But many Triumphs of this era were unreliable, including the 2500 PI with its fuel injection problems, and the poor quality of the TR7 and TR8 sports cars, which killed the marque in the United States.
The Triumph name disappeared in 1984, when the Acclaim was replaced by the Rover 200, which was also simply a rebadged version of Honda's Civic/Ballade model.

Triumph TR2/TR3 February 2004 Car Review - CarPoint Australia
The Triumph TR2 began life as the opportunistic product of a company which, prior to 1952, had shown little interest in or aptitude for the business of building sports cars.
Penetration of the US market, where the 'Triumph' name was more closely identified with motorcycles than cars, took some time and really didn't reach 'boom' levels until after the TR3's appearance in October 1955.
In original TR2 form, the car would accelerate to 60mph (96km/h) in 11.9 seconds, and by the time the TR3A with its seven extra kilowatts arrived in 1958, the time had been cut to 10.6 seconds.

Although Triumph was originally an independent car-maker, it was taken over by Standard in 1944.
Although the TR2 was fast and remarkably cheap, its handling was still somewhat suspect, and it was fortunate that an outright win in the 1954 RAC Rally of March 1954 brought an instant competition record to the notice of motoring enthusiasts.
The remarkable fact which also began to emerge from countless magazine road tests was that a TR2 could not only be a race and a rally winner, it could also be extremely economical: 32-35 mpg was normal for the early cars.
