The TR5 came equipped with front disc brakes, independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering and a four speed gearbox.
In 1968, the TR5 sold in the United Kingdom for approximately £1,260, with wire wheels being another £38, overdrive £60 and a tonneau cover another £13.
The TR5 was virtually identical to the TR250, built during the same period for the North American market.

The Triumph TR6 (1969–1976) was the best-selling Triumph in history when production ended in 1976, but was later surpassed by the TR7.
In the US, it featured the six-cylinder engine that was carried over from the TR250, while the UK version had a more powerful fuel-injected engine from the TR5 that included the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system.
Others argue that the TR7 and TR8 that followed were far ahead of their time.

The TR5 had Triumph’s 2.5-litre straight-six engine which gave 150 bhp and 168 lb/ft torque which translated into 120 mph (0-60 mph in 8.8 seconds) with a very flexible mid-range.
The Triumph TR5 was probably the best of its line, with a new 150bhp six-cylinder engine adapted from the Triumph 2000 under its Michelotti-designed bonnet, using fuel injection and a hot cam to produce performance equal to many 1990s sport sedans.
Instead, what we got was the wimped-out “Triumph 250.” Yes, it had the same six-cylinder engine as the TR5, but Triumph engineers couldn’t come close to meeting 1968 model year U.S. emissions requirements with the hotter engine, so they installed a plain vanilla cam and dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors.
