The Triumph TR7 was a sports car manufactured from 1975 to 1981 by the Triumph Motor Company, then part of British Leyland (and subsequently, BL Ltd.), in the United Kingdom.

But many Triumphs of this era were unreliable, including the 2.5 PI with its fuel injection problems, and the poor quality of the TR7 and TR8 sports cars, which killed the marque in the United States.
The last Triumph model was the Acclaim which was launched in 1981 in a joint venture with Japanese company Honda.
The Triumph name disappeared in 1984, when the Acclaim was replaced by the Rover 200, which was also simply a rebadged version of Honda's Civic/Ballade model.

The Wedge shape of the TR7 caused much consternation amongst the motoring press when it was first unveiled to the public in late 1974.
The TR7 was an innovation, it broke from tradition, trod new ground and dared to be different.
Whatever journalists may say the TR7 was not the death nell for mass produced British sportscars, nor was it the catalyst for the demise of our car industry as a whole.

I think it is generally accepted that the TR7 was not the most inspiring of cars when it first appeared back in late 1974.
In the late 60's the Triumph company were working on a replacement for their TR6 and Stag models.
Looking back, I suppose it was must have looked strange that Triumph's own V8, as used in the Stag, was not utilised and some enthusiasts had critisised the move as a further derogation of the marque.

The TR7 platform had its wheelbase extended by a full twelve inches and longer passenger doors were incorporated in order to balance the side view of the car and improve access to the rear seats.
Early quality niggles were not evident at the time of the launch of the Triumph TR7 and because it was an export-only car, the US journalists were reporting on the car a full year ahead of their counterparts on the domestic market.
