Mira Sorvino is adorable in this lovely adaptation of the 17th-century comedy Triumph of Love.
TRIUMPH OF LOVE is a fine period piece which, though thoroughly cinematic, plays (before an occasionally glimpsed modern day dress audience in the garden)as a theater piece.
Ms Sorvino as the princess is utterly charming, exerting all her wiles as, in order to gain her heart's desire (the love of the usurped prince), she dons masculine garments, flirts with both the sister and the philosopher, and uses her eyes and her ardent eloquence to slay all hearts.

Artsandentertainment: 'Triumph of Love' an imperfect treat
ST. PETERSBURG -- Like a lot of musicals, Triumph of Love runs out of steam in the second act as it madly tries to wrap things up, but the production at the Palladium Theater is still a treat.
With its appealing heroine, Triumph of Love tends to celebrate the cleverness of women at the expense of some rather dim men.
Ultimately, Triumph of Love falls into the category of being an interesting mixed bag, a work that musical theater fans in particular will cherish for its freshness amid a diet of stale standbys like Sweet Charity or Fiddler on the Roof.

Punishment as a means is consistent with love as an abstract principle; it is likewise consistent with Divine love and occupies a prominent place in the Divine Economy of self-unveilment.
Justice is Love protecting itself from association with unrighteousness; mercy is Love treating leniently the guilty and disobedient.
As refracted solar light appears as seven separate colors, Divine Love during the period of sin's existence is seen as a series of componing attributes.

Triumph of Love is a royal farce in any capitalization of the word "royal," even more remarkable that something written in the 18th century (first staged in --1732--) stands up as well as it does in the 21st.
Then again, irrationality is at the heart of Triumph of Love, so we'll let some other critic make the arguments for screwing with perceptions and suggest that those of you who favor the arthouse seek this one out.

Wilde takes his opulent farewell to life, but not before giving the play its title: "Before Plato could describe love, the loved one had to be invented.
We would never love anybody if we could see past our invention." The genius of the play and this superb production is that it sweeps us into both the invention and the seeing past it — that deeply human act of hindsight managing to be both ruthlessly honest and miraculously compassionate.

His 1732 comedy, The Triumph of Love, seems again ripe for an audience in an age of sexual freedom (tempered by a devastating world-wide epidemic of a sexually transmitted disease) and scientific advancement (little deterring war and global social and economic inquality).
It tells the story of a reigning princess, Aspasie (Mira Sorvino), who falls in love with Agis (Jay Rodan), the legitimate heir to the throne she holds.
Only she justifies and exemplifies here a triumph of love; her performance suggests what the film might better have been.
