Troika Pottery was founded in February 1963 when Leslie Illsley, Benny Sirota, and Jan Thomspon agreed to put up £1000 each to take over the Wells Pottery at Wheal Dream, St. Ives Cornwall.
The word “troika” is Russian in origin and refers to a vehicle drawn by a team of three horses.
In 1970, just as Troika was beginning to enjoy the fruits of its long road to recognition, the St. Ives Council terminated their lease on the Wheal Dream pottery.
