In Lagrangian mechanics, a Lagrangian point (or L-point) is one of five positions in space where the gravitational fields of two bodies of substantial but differing mass combine to form a point at which a third body of negligible mass would be stationary relative to the two bodies.
At the third point of an equilateral triangle with the base of the line defined by the two masses, such that the point is ahead of the smaller mass in its orbit around the larger mass.

Lagrangian point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lagrange Points mark positions where the combined gravitational pull of the two large masses provides precisely the centripetal force required to rotate with them.
The first three Lagrangian points are technically stable only in the plane perpendicular to the line between the two bodies.
Lagrange points (usually the L4 and L5 points) are sometimes used to enter a system closer to planets, almost always for small-scale military or pirate operations due to the risk of catastrophic misjumps.

Because dirty snowballs are thought to have formed in the outer reaches of the solar system, from which they are occasionally dislodged and end up looping closer to the sun as comets, the team suggests that the asteroid probably formed far from the sun.
It most likely was captured in one of Jupiter's Trojan points - two eddies where debris collects in Jupiter's orbit - during a period when the inner solar system was intensely bombarded by comets, around 650 million years after the formation of the solar system.
These points, one leading and the other trailing Jupiter, are places were the gravitational attraction of the sun and Jupiter are balanced, allowing debris to collect like dust bunnies in the corner of a room.

Eric points out that the observed presence of a trojan companion to a hot Jupiter would thus be evidence that the hot Jupiter arrived at its short-period orbit via migration.
If we have a trojan, however, a planetary transit will be offset from the radial velocity zero point, which is associated with the orbit of a “ghost body” that combines the gravitational effect of the primary planet and its trojan companion.
The presence of the trojan companion can be inferred by measuring the lag between the center of the transit and the zero crossing of the radial velocity curve.

SPACE.com -- Asteroids Near Jupiter are Really Comets
The finding could mean that many or most of asteroid-like objects hovering around Jupiter and known as Trojans are actually comets that originated much farther from the Sun and which were captured by the giant gas planet when the solar system was still young.
At these points, the gravitational field of Jupiter and the Sun are perfectly balanced, and objects can be captured and brought to relative rest.
Because most comets are thought to form in the Kuiper Belt, a distant region of the solar system outside the orbit of Neptune, the researchers think Patroclus and Menoetius formed about 650 million years after the formation of the solar system.
