Tromboon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tromboon (also called a babone) is a musical instrument made up of the reed and bocal of the bassoon attached to the body of a trombone instead of the trombone mouthpiece, combining the "worst" aspects of each instrument, a reed and a slide.
The name of the instrument is a portmanteau of "trombone" and "bassoon".

 Tromboon
The tromboon is a musical instrument made up of the reed and bocal of the bassoon attached to the body of a trombone instead of the trombone mouthpiece.
This instrument is called for in the scores of P. Bach in his oratorio The Seasonings as well as the Serenude (for devious instruments).

A tromboon is an unfortunate invention of sorts when one places the reed of a bassoon into the mouthpieve of a trombone and attempts to play.
I really don't think the tromboons can actually be composed for, though.
Bassoon does with the bass instruments (except bass oboe) and oboe does with treble instruments.

Bud Clark Presents P.D.Q. Bach on 88.7KXMS / Fine Arts Radio International®
P.D.Q. Bach's music constantly resurfaces in the most unlikely places, thanks to the tireless efforts of musicalologist Peter Schickele, recent lifetime achievement honoree of the 2001 Fine Arts Radio International® Awards.
The new radio series will feature the many unusual instruments utilized so ineffectively by P.D.Q. Bach in his compositions, the tromboon, the lasso d'amore, and the hardart, to name just a few.
Professor Clark will also season the musical mix with a few of the compositions of Peter Schickele, professor of music at the University of North Dakota at Hoople, himself a bassoon player and writer of film scores, classical chamber music, and jazz.

To answer your question systematically, one category is funny sounds, which we may think of sometimes as being inherently funny but it is culturally biased.
For instance there's a P.D.Q. Bach instrument called the tromboon, which has a bassoon reed inserted into a trombone instead of the mouthpiece and you get a sound sort of like a sick cow in the upper register and a squadron of planes going over in the lower.
It really sounds funny in a classical context, but, for instance, we all know there's jazz where they get really growly sounds not meaning to be particularly funny, just meaning to be very down and dirty.
