In 1985 two Fokker F27 Troopships were leased by the US Army parachute team, the Golden Knights.
The aircraft were used both to transport the team to airshows and also as their jumping platform.

The sinking of the troopship Mendi during World War 1 was a disaster in its own right.
The troopship Mendi set sail from Cape Town on 16 January 1917 with 802 members of the 5th Battalion, South African Native Labor Corps (SANLC).
The dead are remembered on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, and in 1986, a bronze plaque was unveiled at the Delville Wood memorial which portrays the sinking of the ship.

The story of the Gen. Nelson M. Walker troopship began in 1997, when military artifact historian Art Beltrone first visited the "Ghost Fleet" on the James River in Virginia to assist with research for the World War II movie, The Thin Red Line.
Once aboard the aging vessel, Beltrone found crowded troop compartments littered with hundreds of graffiti-marked bunk canvases, bulletin boards, and other historic artifacts left not by WWII troops headed for war in the Pacific, but by soldiers going to war in Southeast Asia a generation later.
Many of the artifacts, thanks to the work of the Beltrones, have been rescued from the ship and are now relocated in museums throughout the U.S., including the new National Museum of the United States Army, the Oakland Museum of California, and the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution.

In 1921 the title of the operating company became Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. On the outbreak of war in 1939, Canadian Pacific placed all their ships at the disposal of the government and several were taken over as troopships.

The following pictures of the U S Troopship Brazil were provided to me by Martin Lagin who served with the 304th Infantry Regiment in L Company.
He was supplied the pictures in 1946 by the Moore McCormick Cruise Line, the owners of the Brazil at the time.

There are several ships there that were carrying stores/aircraft, etc. so maybe your father was looking out for these.
Of course if he were on a Troopship it may have sailed independently.
There is no simple way of finding this out (as far as I am aware) so it will probably involve a trip to the British National Archive.

I finished my tour with the 398th Bomb Group on November 30, 1944, (Merseburg) and was shipped to Liverpool on December 10 for the trip home, supposedly on the Queen Mary.
It was a ‘pleasant’ nine-day trip to New York; especially knowing I had survived Merseburg a few times.
Our troopship: USS WAKEFIELD, which had brought the 398th to England earlier that year.

The newly named Covington was repaired from the damages caused by her German crew and was transformed into a troopship and began her active war duties in mid-October 1917 when she left port for her first voyage carrying U.S. troops to France.
There was no explanation by the Department as to whether the six men were missing after the transfer of the crew from the troopship to the destroyer or after the transport actually went down.

It shows the U.S.S. Maui, a troopship used during the First World War by the United States.
It is not clear whether this postcard was given out to the returning troops or sold to them by some enterprising photographer.
This ship was attached to the U.S. troop fleet from the Matson Navigation Company, the primary shipping company serving the Hawaiian Islands, and went into service as a troopship in March 1918.
