He was president of the Florida Railroad Company from 1853 to 1866, and president of the Peninsular Railroad Company, the Tropical Florida Railway Company, and the Fernandina and Jacksonville Railroad Company.
Railroad offices were located in Gainesville and Yulee traveled between Fernandina, his home, and these offices until union troops forced the evacuation of Fernandina in 1862.

Upon completion of the railroad to Deer Hammock in 1859, the name of the town was changed in honor of James T. Archer, Florida's Secretary of State 1845-49 and advocate of internal improvements.
Because the route of the Florida Railroad, completed in 1861 and reorganized after the War, passed west of the region, the Santa Fe Canal Company was chartered in March of 1877 to open a waterway from the railroad in Waldo through Lake Alto to Santa Fe Lake.
Railroad construction bypassed the town, and by the 1890's Leno became a ghost town.

American Contract and Finance Company a New York corporation assigned to the interest of Charles Howe and others sued everyone involved challenging that half of the Perrine land grant was theirs for their early involvement.
