SEPTEMBER 2001 NEWSLETTER Hurricane specialists at the hurricane center tried their hand at running H*Wind for the first time during Tropical Storm Barry, focusing on timely analysis and quality control of real-time wind observations. Part of the problem is that the compact core of a hurricane, including the spiral bands of showers and thunderstorms that gather and focus energy, can’t be modeled in sufficient detail on the computers and models used for everyday forecasting. NOAA News Online (Story 702) THE HEAT IS ON August 7, 2001 — As the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry made the final stop along its soggy trail in Alabama on Tuesday, other parts of the nation continued to wilt under blistering temperatures and dangerously high heat indices. NOAA's National Weather Service issued heat advisories from the Dakotas to New York City and South Carolina, warning residents to take precaution against the heat. Michael Wyllie, meteorologist-in-charge of the forecast office in Upton, said "this is the longest heat spell here in a couple of years."
