Tropical waves, also known as easterly waves, are elongated areas of relatively low air pressure, oriented north to south, causing areas of cloudiness and thunderstorms.
Tropical waves are generally carried westward by the prevailing easterly winds along the tropics and subtropics near the equator.
Tropical waves develop when warm air drifts off of the continent of Africa onto the Atlantic ocean.

The Atlantic High Pressure ridge strengthened producing a strong trade wind flow across the islands and a Tropical wave moved across mainly the Southern Caribbean islands produced enough moisture to cause a few showers across the islands.
A strong tropical wave affected the Southern islands but had little effect on Antigua and Barbuda as a high pressure ridge dominated, generating Easterly winds at 16- 24 knots with higher gusts.
The seas across Antigua and Barbuda were affected by the wave however, becoming moderate to rough with waves 1.5 - 2.5m or 5 - 8ft.

There are two tropical waves over the hurricane birthing grounds in the Atlantic as well as a weaker wave a little to the South of us.
Looking over the Atlantic, two tropical waves are slowly making their way across to our side of the world and we will have to see what they develop into, if anything.
One very weak tropical wave is touching us now, but water vapor imagery shows very little deep moisture over the Caribbean at the moment, with a few showers/thunderstorms associated with the tropical wave.

So far this Tropical wave is not very more than average; small area of deep convetion, not much organization but should bare watching because sometimes something that doesn't appear special ends up being just that and conditions appear favorable for some slow devlopment.
Tonight the tropical wave (220nm west of the Cape Verde Islands) appears well-defined on sat imagery and convection seems to be increasing.
Now yet another tropical wave is coming off of the ITCZ, (surfs up), this one looks good but it's too early to say anything, although almost anything now a days (late August) can form hurricanes.

In a statement this morning, forecasters said thunderstorms associated with the wave have increased just to the south of the Dominican Republic.

A large-amplitude tropical wave and associated broad 1013MB low is approaching 50ºW. The low is currently positioned on the southern end of the wave axis, however visible imagery depicts greater low-level curvature further north.
None develop a true tropical cyclone, and any low that does form would probably have to work hard to make it to the surface, not to mention it would be a primarily baroclinic origination.

Most winds in the tropics come from the east (the easterlies), so the northwest wind is usually the last wind to be found in a developing storm.
We did not find this wind today, so the system is still an open tropical wave, but very close to becoming a tropical depression.
While not as dramatic or powerful as a hurricane, tropical waves draw a lot of moisture, too.
