A tropical year is the length of time that the Sun, as viewed from the Earth, takes to return to the same position along the ecliptic (its path among the stars on the celestial sphere).
As the equinox completes a full circle with respect to the perihelion (in about 21000 years), the length of the tropical year as defined with reference to a specific point on the ecliptic oscillates around the mean tropical year.
This is due to the fortuitous mutual cancellation of most of the factors affecting the length of this particular measure of the tropical year during the current era.

Tropical year   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
On Earth, we notice the progress of the tropical year from the slow motion of the Sun from south to north and back; the word "tropical" is derived from Greek tropos meaning "turn".
Besides this, tropical years have been defined for specific points on the ecliptic: in particular the vernal equinox year, that start and ends when the Sun is at the vernal equinox.
On Mars, however, the differences between the different types of years are an order of magnitude greater: vernal equinox year = 668.5907 sols, summer solstice year = 668.5880 sols, autumn equinox year = 668.5940 sols, winter solstice year = 668.5958 sols, with the tropical year being 668.5921 sols.

Iranian Calendar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In particular, the true value of the length of the year in the Iranian calendar should be emphasized, since nowadays there is a widespread confusion between the concepts of the modern ``tropical'' year and the vernal-equinox year upon which the Iranian calendar is based.
In fact most astronomers and calendar adepts are defining the tropical year as starting with the vernal equinox but using the length of the newly-defined tropical year for their calculations (Note 10).
It should be emphasized that this new concept of the tropical year, introduced for celestial mechanical studies, is based on the mean longitude of the Sun and does not depend on a specific origin for the annual apparent motion of the Sun.
