Troubadour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A troubadour was a composer and performer of songs during the Middle Ages in Europe.
The earliest troubadour whose work survives is Guilhem de Peitieus (Guillaume d'Aquitaine or William IX, Duke of Aquitaine, 1071-1127).
Troubadours whose works have survived to the present day include Bernart de Ventadorn, Arnaut Daniel and Jaufré Rudel.

TROUBADOUR - LoveToKnow Article on TROUBADOUR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
These noble troubadours were distinguished by their wealth and independence from those who made their song their profession, and who wandered from castle to castle and from bower to bower.
The troubadour was occasionally accompanied in his travels by an apprentice or servant, called a joglar, whose business was to provide a musical setting for the poets words; sometimes it was not the troubadour himself, but his joglar, who sang the songs.
It was a matter of jealous attention to the troubadour to keep his name and fame clear of the claims of the joglar, who belonged to a lower caste; although it is true that some poets of very high talent rose from being joglars and attained the rank of troubadours.

Musical Forms - Troubadours and Trouvères
The earliest lives of the troubadours are the vidas, compiled in the 13th and 14th centuries, which have lent a romantic air to the troubadour; this is only gradually being dispelled, to reveal a well-educated and highly sophisticated verse-technician, whose music and poetry combined in the service of the courtly ideal of love.
Troubadours were often of high social standing (like Guillaume IX of Aquitaine, generally described as the first of the troubadours) from the nobility, but they could come from any social background as long as they conformed to courtly ideals and could appreciate and acquire the refinement that went with courtly love.
The main topic of troubadour poetry is love in its various aspects, and it was the need to express them as succinctly as possible that led to the establishment of genres, distinguished less by form than by content or implied situation.

Troubadours and Trouveres were lyric poets or poet-musicians of France in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Troubadour - Cunnan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Some troubadours managed to find their way to the court of Alfonso X, and the trouvères and minnesingers who were both highly influenced by the troubadours continued on, but in Occitania at least, the troubadours were a thing of the past.
There were three styles used by the troubadours for their lyrics, although by the end of the 12th century only the first two remained.
Some claim that the troubadours used the church modes, albeit with some significant deviations, whilst others claim that these deviations prove that the troubadours were not working with the church modes, and that they may not have been using any sort of unified system at all.

 Troubadour Poets and Poetry
Troubadours were court poets, singers, and composers, often in the employ of Cathar nobles and rulers.
Troubadours were also to some degree influenced by the great Arab poetry, and especially the Sufi poetry, flowing in through Moorish Spain, the trade routes of North Africa, and Palestine and the Crusaders interacted with the Muslim world there.
The Troubadours scattered, but their influence continued with the many related poetic/mystical traditions that emerged from their diaspora: the Trouveres in norther France, the Minnensingers in Germany (including Wolfram von Ehrenbach, author of the first Grail romance), the Fideli di Amore in Italy (including Dante).

What a pleasent surprise "Tailgate Troubadour" was to me,- not only is it one of those releases that keeps getting better each time I listen to it, but it's also a rare case of instrumental rock guitar music that never gets lost in flashy pyrotechniques and the dreaded "toomanynotes" syndrome.
