Troubetzkoy stated that one of his major motivations in writing this book was to generate interest in the Imperial Legend in the hopes of raising funds needed to open the crypt of Alexander I in St. Petersburg.
Troubetzkoy succeeds in his task, because regardless of what is found in the crypt, his findings will be a significant addition to Russian history.

Princes Troubetzkoy descend from Demetrius I Starshiy, one of Olgierd's sons, who ruled the towns of Bryansk and Starodub.
Undoubtedly the most prominent of early Troubetzkoys was Prince Dmitry Timofeievich (9th generation from Giedymin), who helped Prince Dmitry Pozharsky to rise a volunteer army and deliver Moscow from the Poles in 1612.
By 1660s, however, the only Troubetzkoy left, Prince Yuriy Trubetskoy, returned to Moscow and was given a boyar title by Tsar Alexis I of Russia.
