Albuquerque's Environmental Story - A Pictorial History of Albuquerque Area Geology
The geological history that led to the city's familiar mountain/valley/mesa trough shape is long and complex, extending hundreds of millions of years.
Thus a huge grave-like trough called a "rift" is formed.
The Rio Grande follows the rift zone depositing on its flood plain materials which add to the fertility of the alluvial materials eroded from the mountains.

 Contributions to Zoology
The orbits are deeply incised into anterior margin with two fossae, rimmed by granulate emarginations; the inner orbital fossa is set ahead of the outer fossa and is separated from it by a trough, bounded laterally by extraorbital and ventrally by suborbital spines.
The inner orbital fossa is larger and bears spines on its lower and outer border, and has a suborbital drain or trough between.
They are rimmed, and the inner orbital fossae is defined by a separate, tuberculate inner orbital ridge extending from edge of rostrum to the inner orbital septum.

 UCMP Glossary: Geology
The long, and fairly wide trough that has formed as a section of the Earth's crust has dropped down along faults, e.g., African Rift Valley in East Africa.
A long, narrow crack in the entire thickness of the Earth's crust, which is bounded by normal faults on either side and forms as the crust is pulled apart; v.
The area on continents where a trough bounded by normal faults is forming; the site of crustal extension, similar to that which occurs at mid-oceanic ridges; rift basin or rift valley- n.

AllRefer.com - rift valley (Geology And Oceanography) - Encyclopedia
rift valley, elongated depression, trough, or graben in the earth's crust, bounded on both sides by normal faults and occurring on the continents or under the oceans.
The development of a rift valley in a continent is believed to be a precursor to the breakup of the continent and the development of a new ocean basin by seafloor spreading.
Rift valleys, such as the Red Sea and the African rift valleys, are commonly the sites of volcanism and the locus of much earthquake activity.

SUBDIVISIONS OF THE MESOPROTEROZOIC YELLOWJACKET FORMATION AND HOODOO QUARTZITE, SALMON RIVER MOUNTAINS, CENTRAL IDAHO
The 5th unit of rippled and mudcracked couplets, and the 6th, of reddish trough cross-bedded and laminated fine sandstone with uncracked silt to clay couplets, correlate with shallow-water, mud-cracked strata of the uppermost type Yellowjacket exposed north of Middle Fork Ranger Station.
The overlying Hoodoo Quartzite is a cliff-forming heavy-mineral laminated feldspathic arenite.
Above the Hoodoo is at least 150 m of medium to coarse arenite and siltite with hummocky couplets, plus gray microlaminated wavy siltite, with local calc-silicate pods at the base.

Geology of Great Britain, UK - Introduction and maps
This trough is fault-bounded, although the Highland Boundary Fault (to the north) and the Southern Uplands Fault (to the south) are not shown on this particular map.
It is intended to provide introductory information on the geology of Great Britain to give the background and to facilitate understanding of the geology of the south coast.
It is a classic map which shows amongst other features the geology of Tilgate Forest in the Weald, where the wife of Dr Mantell was the first person to discover the remains of a dinosaur.

 Canin Plateau Geology EN
The glacial trough morphology is cut by the V shaped young valley of Raccolana, which slopes in the opposite direction.
The karst plateau, about 1,900 m high, accommodates numerous fractures, zsombolys (karst chambers with cupola opened up to the surface) and fracture shafts.
South of the valley the Canin Plateau raises in steps reaching the highest point of 1,998 m at Col delle Erbe Mount.

As the rift deepened those streams started following the north-south trough of the rift.
The area surrounding the rift was unstable and subject to many earthquakes that formed deep cracks, called fissures.
Its effects are standing tall on the western edge of Petroglyph National Monument—the Albuquerque volcanoes whose ancient flows gave birth to an extensive mesa and a jagged, boulder-strewn escarpment.

The landing site is located on Candor Mensa, a mesa in Candor Chasma, which is an east-west trending trough associated with Valles Marineris.
Talus slopes sorrounding the base of Candor Mensa appear to be composed of landslide material derived from the steep canyon walls above.
Although landing a spacecraft on the floor of the Valles Marineris may be too dangerous for the first sample-return mission to Mars, the scientific rewards would be so great that such a landing should be considered for later flights.

MESOPROTEROZOIC STRATA SOUTHWEST OF SALMON IDAHO
Tabular flat-laminated, planar and trough crossbedded fine- to coarse-grained feldspathic quartz sandstone of the overlying Hoodoo Formation records a large prograding and retreating alluvial fan complex (Revett correlative).
The upward transition to small antidunes grading to current ripples and desiccation-cracked muddy layers above the Hoodoo (argillaceous quartzite of Ekren, 1988) probably records the return of sandflat environments, somewhat muddier than those of the type Yellowjacket.
Along Iron Creek, south of Salmon, strata mapped as Apple Creek Formation (Ekren, 1988) contain flat-laminated sandstone correlative with the Hoodoo Quartzite overlain by hummocky siltite correlative with the Cobalt Yellowjacket Formation.
