A female singer singing a male role (also called trouser role) is one of the strangest realities of the art form opera, which does not exist in the same way within other performance arts.
It is all the more astonishing that the phenomenon of the trouser role has hardly been taken up by research, although in the last decades corporeality, performance, gender and role models have played a significant role within musicology (similar to other disciplines within the humanities).
First, the question should be answered, why many trouser roles as well as castrato roles were transposed and sung by male voices in performances of the 20th century.

It is a classic "trouser role" -- a male character intended to be sung by a woman.
While it might be argued that Mozart's choice of soprano for the teen was meant to suggest his voice hadn't changed, trouser roles are created for musical reasons.
He's keen to perform other trouser roles, such as the composer in "Ariadne auf Naxos," Octavian in "Der Rosenkavalier" and roles for castrato in Mozart's "Idomeneo" and "La Clemenza di Tito." Some of the supporting roles featuring in duets or other ensembles are unmemorable, in Dalibor there are moments of ‘ghostly’ anticipations of entries after a pause which have either appeared or slipped through the net in the digital transfer, and some of the orchestral playing may not always be up to standard.
