Trout Cod are often found close to cover and in relatively fast currents and in cooler waters than Murray Cod.
Trout Cod are believed to spawn at temperatures as low as 16 degrees in upland rivers, using rocks as a spawning substrate; these are clear adaptations to cool, rocky upland river habitats.

Unfortunately, Murray Cod have died out of many of their upland habitats due to a combination of overfishing, siltation, dams and weirs blocking migration, and possibly, in some cases, competition between juvenile Murray Cod and introduced Trout species.

Trout is the common name given to a number of species of freshwater fishes belonging to the salmon family, ''Salmonidae''.
The Brown Trout (''Salmo trutta fario'') and the Sea Trout (''Salmo trutta trutta'') are fish distinguished chiefly by the fact that the Brown Trout is largely a freshwater fish, while the Sea Trout shows anadromous reproduction, spawning in fresh water but migrating to the oceans for much of its adult life.
Brown Trout are active by day and night and feed on invertebrates from the river floor, insect larvae, molluscs, small fish and frogs, and aerial insects; the last element in their diet is what allows trout to be a favoured target for fly fishing.
