Troy (2004) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
Troy's claim to fame though is not so much its male characters, as it is about "the face that launched a thousand ships" and the relationship "difficulties" endured by anyone who's ever been in a relationship.
Troy is a film that benefits from a talented group of actors being able to rein in a film sometimes at war with itself as to what type of epic its filmmakers intended it to be.
Troy is epic filmmaking at its best and while on the long side, it is a massively entertaining adventure.

 Troy
For an historian, the new film "Troy" presents a dilemma.
His "Troy" is a very human story, with those basic themes from which history and myth derive their power-love, hate, revenge, redemption.
Troy was rich, and the Mycenaeans wanted to plunder her wealth and control her strategic trade location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

Troy (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Troy is a movie that was released on May 14, 2004 about the Trojan War, which is described in Homer's Iliad and other Greek myths as having taken place in Anatolia (modern Turkey) around the 13th or 12th century BC; however, the plot differs greatly from Homer (see deviations below).
Troy is the center of a strong city-state and is known for its great defensive walls.
Whereas in the film, Achilles seeks revenge for the death of Patroclus by donning his armor and heading off towards a duel with Hector, in the Iliad, Achilles first had to wait for Hephaestus to forge him a new suit of armor and there was an intervening battle before the duel.

 Filmtracks: Troy (Gabriel Yared/James Horner)
Any film music fan knows, of course, that Horner's flaw is his own endless self-repetition of style throughout his scores.
Keeping Tzarovska on the project was Horner's sole effort in producing a score that was at all relevant to the age and locale of the film, and her performances are not integrated particularly well into the mass of orchestral material.
Troy is the pinnacle of Yared's career, utilizing the kind of research and painstakingly complex writing that obviously takes a year to assemble.

Troy Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Filmed on location in Malta and Mexico, Troy is set in Greece over three thousand years ago, when rulers from rival kingdoms vied for control of the Aegean Sea.
The result is a film that's as close to old-style Hollywood epics as we've seen in a while, and far from being as bad as the reviews that have pilloried Troy, It all looks pretty impressive on a crystal-clear picture that appears to be in the 2.35:1 aspect range, with crisp Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
And filming in Mexico because the Iraq war ruled out Morocco as a site, the crew had to develop a turtle incubation nursery in order to get permission to film on beaches that were a refuge for the protected species.

Trojan Wars: On the Big and Little Screen
The city of Troy is increasingly well known and we have a good idea of its appearance, thanks to the Troia Projekt (University of Tubingen and University of Cincinnati) excavation and the virtual reality based on it; the filmmakers, however, must have wanted something more spectacular (see photos).
Troy's intimidating outer wall in the film, which I take to be 40 or 50 feet in height with higher towers, is a fiction (they didn't have siege engines for battering down walls in the Late Bronze Age, so walls on that scale would have been a colossal waste).
The lower city of Troy was protected by a ditch, shown here, but in the movie the ditch has been transformed into a wall that's 40 or 50 feet tall.

His final confrontation with Achilles is one of the film's crowning glories and a pivotal moment in the film.
It's beyond me why people are griping that this film is bereft of ancient languages and bears only "a passing resemblance to the story of the fall of Troy" and is tantamount to an "erosion of our historical awareness".
I think we should remember that the texts that this film is based on are considered by most to be works of fiction, and so the makers of this film choosing to change elements of the story isn't quite so harmful as re-imagining historical facts.

At a couple of points in the film Achilles aaaaalmost manages to break away from these pressures but as was the case with Pacino's character in the GODFATHER films - something always manages to pull him back into the war, the violence, the brutality.

 Troy : film review
Troy reminded me of the Trojan horse the Greeks use to infiltrate the city: big and impressive on the outside, but filled with malice on the inside that oozes out over the course of its extensive three-hour running time.
The dialogue is laughably bad (one has to wonder if Homer the Simpson and not Homer the Greek poet served as his inspiration), the storyline a muddled, confusing mess and the relationships between the one-dimensional characters are practically deficient of any sense of emotion.

 Review: Troy - Film Junk
During the course of its trying-too-hard-to-be-epic 3 hour length, Troy swerves from corny and predictable, to stirring and dramatic, to senseless and indifferent, and somehow leaves you staring blankly at the screen by the time the credits roll.
Veteran Peter O’Toole raises the film’s potential greatly every time he is on screen as old King Priam, and his scene with Achilles towards the end is one of those momentary lapses where the movie actually seems to have emotion.
The basic story in Troy is one that many of us should know, whether from reading in school or through indirect references, but it does have some contain some cool twists and will still offer surprises for even the most well-researched scholar.

An epic in the truest sense of the word, Troy is inspired by Homer's tragic poem The Iliad - a mythic rendering of an ancient war fought between Greeks and Trojans.
It's only when the walls of Troy are breached that the film becomes a little unsteady, largely because its key conflict has already been resolved.

"Troy" / a review and/or comments from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
The only content in the film that strongly suggests a supernatural element is Thetis (Julie Christie) telling Achilles that if he stays away from the war, he’ll have a family but will be forgotten; if he goes and fights, his name will be remembered, but he will die.
When the film is over, you may be left with a number of topics to think about or to discuss with your family and friends.
The film held true to what it was like in those days - sex (which was kept more discreet than what it could have been), violence, sinners, lost souls, etc. The film, in no way, acknowledges that the greek “gods” existed at all.
