 Troyes Revisited
Troyes, the old capital of the Comtes de Champagne, was chosen as the meeting place for this confraternity of historians, art historians, preservationists, master stained-glass specialists, and artists for its rich concentration of stained-glass windows.
And Troyes was in the middle of it all.
Troyes would be unthinkable without its wood-frame buildings, narrow alleys, intriguing nooks and crannies, old churches and their stained-glass windows, cobbled streets and pedestrian precincts.

Chrétien de Troyes wrote in Champagne, France, during the last half of the twelfth century.
Of his life we know neither the beginning nor the end, but we know that between 1160 and 1181 he lived in Troyes at the court of his patroness Countess Marie de Champagne, daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, perhaps as herald-at-arms (as Gaston Paris speculated).

Then in the ninth century, Troyes was jolted by another wave of invasion, this time from the redoubtable Vikings, who had landed in what was to be known as Normandy and burned and pillaged with impunity all the way to the heart of Champagne.
Out of Troyes the following morning in the cool fall Champagne weather our car threaded its way over the gentle hills that would be covered with vineyards in due time and now had been prepared and raked smooth to present in ochre a picture-perfect vista of bucolic peace and serenity.
To this land that survived ages of vicissitudes, to Troyes and Champagne Ardenne, to the hills and vineyards, the champagne domains, the upper Seine River, the châteaus, the church spires, the gargoyles, and Jacques and Martine, it is fitting not to say adieu or good-bye, but to say A bientôt.

It was a mistake by Tony Heurtebis which led to Leeds' initial opportunity in the fifth minute, the Troyes keeper spilling a Robbie Keane cross, but despite Mark Viduka in close attendance the Australia international was slow to react.
With pressure mounting, Troyes were finally undone again in the 24th minute, with Viduka initially beating Danjou to the punch following a Harte throw.

Arthur never cut such a splendid figure on the literary scene before de Troyes wrote his Romances in the twelfth century, and it is arguably due to de Troyes that Camelot is a household name to this day.
