Eel - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
True eels (Anguilliformes) are an order of fish, which consists of 4 suborders, 19 families, 110 genera and 400 species.
Some eels dwell in deep water (in case of family Synaphobranchidae, this comes to a depth of 4,000 m), or are active swimmers (the family Nemichthyidae - to the depth of 500 m).
In 1970, Dr. David G. Smith from the University of Miami, identified the larva found as that of the spiny eel, an eel-like fish whose larvae length is equal to its adult length, while the larvae length of the true eel is much shorter than its adult length.

Gulper eel - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The eel's pouch-like lower jaw resembles that of a pelican, earning it the nickname "pelican eel." It is also sometimes referred to as the "umbrellamouth gulper." The gulper eel's stomach can stretch and expand to accommodate large meals.
The eel uses a long, whip-like tail for movement, and the end of the tail is luminous to attract prey.
The gulper eel grows to about two to six feet in length and is found in all of the world's major oceans at depths ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 feet (1–2 km).

Description: Eel-like fish (not a true eel) with electric organs; dorsal and ventral fins absent; anal fin very long, united with caudal fin to form a single fin which does not extend on to the dorsal surface of the body.
In the electric eel, the organ is arranged in columns of electroplaques which run longitudinally and make up a large portion of the animal's mass.
Lying motionless in the water, the eel is usually electrically inert but when it begins to move, it emits small direction finding impulses at a frequency of about 50 per second.

 Fish - American eel
The American eel occurs in freshwater rivers and lakes, estuaries, coastal areas and open ocean from the southern tip of Greenland, along the Atlantic coast of North America, throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, to Venezuela, and inland in the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes.
The eel is an abundant resident of all tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay in its yellow eel phase.
Now in their yellow eel phase, the American eels will remain in the brackish and fresh waters of these rivers for the majority of their lives–for at least five and possibly as many as twenty years.

Freshwater Eels and Eel-like Fishes, Families: Anguillidae, Moringuidae, Mastacembelidae, Synbranchidae, and Gymnotidae
Eels vary in size but the average size of most species is from between 12" to 36" (30 - 90 cm) long.
Eels only need to be fed a couple of times a week and some may refuse food offered that often, eating only once every two or three weeks.
Because most eels are naked or have very small scales protecting their bodies it is important that the substrate is soft, such as fine sand and peat.
