TrueSpace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
trueSpace is a 3D computer graphics and animation software developed by Caligari Corporation, originally created for the Amiga Computer, and later for the Windows platform.
One of the most distinctive features of trueSpace is its interface, using mainly 3D widgets for most common editing operations.
The software's native formats are basically two: one for standalone objects (with the file extension.cob), and another for the scenes (with the file extension.scn).

TrueSpace's ability to manipulate, deform and sculpt three dimensional objects directly and in real time is unique.
In TrueSpace there is no need to modify an object 'mathematically' by entering values in a dialog box (though it does permit you to do this).
What TrueSpace does well is to provide tools which allow the user to interact with an object such that its shape is modified by pushing, pulling, scaling, bending and rotating.

While TrueSpace is a powerful tool for modeling objects which can be exported to other 3D systems it is also capable of creating complex 3D scenes.
Another example of this realism in lighting is seen when a light is projected through a transparent object which has a mapped image on its surface: the light acts as a projector for the image.
Objects can be visually aligned or they can be aligned by entering absolute X,Y and Z positions, but this technique is cumbersome, inexact and does not permit the alignment of multiple objects on their bounding boxes, centers, by offsets and so on.

While TrueSpace also comes with a somewhat limited library of material properties (for example, textures simulating glass, metal, granite and so on) that can be applied directly to objects, the library is flexible and permits the addition of user defined materials.
Not only is TrueSpace a good tool for modeling objects and scenes, it also has the added feature of being able to animate these objects and scenes.
The ability to morph one object into another object is missing, but you can deform an object in the animation allowing for such effects as the squishing of a ball as it impacts the ground on a bounce.

Unfortunately I eventually found that most of them were not implemented nearly as well as they were in the much more expensive packages and in a few cases had shortcomings that drastically reduced either their capabilities or user friendliness.
I spent between one and two years working with trueSpace and by the time I had pretty much stopped using it I realized that almost all of that time was spent trying to figure out how to force the program to do something I wanted but which it was reluctant or completely unwilling to produce.
I have probably made trueSpace sound worse than it is. In fact it has improved quite a bit in version 5 but I upgraded to that version and tried it briefly and even with the newer features I keep finding limitations to their use that other programs do not have.

TrueSpace fills that niche in the market for those who need a quality 3D package but can't justify spending many thousands of dollars.

Truespace was the first desktop 3D package to successfully offer real-time editing in part-rendered shaded mode (as opposed to mere wireframes).
Truespace is popular for designing 3D characters for use in games and multimedia, and it's now possible to create complex symmetrical objects, such as a person's face, in half the time by using the Mirrored modelling tools and just concentrating on one side.
The Truespace documentation assumes you already understand 3D concepts, so when you read 'Higher noise amplitude setting results in visible noise perturbations to the volumetric scattering', don't expect any further explanation.
