Truism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A truism is a claim that is so obvious or self-evident as to be hardly worth mentioning, except as a reminder or as a rhetorical or literary device.
In logic, a proposition may be a truism even if it is not a tautology, a restatement of a definition, or a theorem derived from axioms that are generally held to be true.
In philosophy, a sentence which asserts incomplete truth conditions for a proposition may be regarded as a truism.

 Tautology or Truism
A truism is distinct from a tautology in that it is not true by definition.
Clearly, the truism argument is more tricky than a tautology in that it is rooted in what people believe and not pure logic, as a tautology argument is rooted.
You state that the case is a truism, explain how it is a truism, and why this means the case should be rejected.

 An Elementary Moral Truism
Whilst in this case the discussion concerned activity at the level of the state, the same truism can be equally applied to the level of the individual.
Indeed, strict adherence to this elementary moral truism — at both the level of the state, and the level of the individual - is our only way out of the catastrophe that has befallen us, in Iraq and at home.
While application of our elementary moral truism at the level of the state is crucially important, application of the truism at the level of the individual is perhaps our true, revolutionary way out of the current malaise.

A number of experiences during the past couple of weeks have reminded me of a few technology truisms that I had begun to take for granted — truisms that you might find helpful in your day-to-day life.
This truism was brought home to me late last week while visiting with the owner of a copy store in Rock Springs, Wyo.

If "truism" is not just a word but a worthy topic in itself, I guess there should be an article about it.
Personally, I just thought it's a word and should be in the Wikitionary.

Altruism or All-truism, it is amazing what an extra L for love can do to a word and maybe even to a world.
I added a L for love to altruism and made a new word All-truism meaning All true.
It suggests that we are all part of the whole humanity and anything we do to help others we also do for ourselves for the end result will be the world will be a better place, a safer place, a more loving place with less disease, hatred, animosity and violence.

The New York Review of Books: UNIVERSAL GRAMMAR
It remains only to add that the truism has always been regarded as exactly that.
Note that one who takes the trouble to understand what is always assumed might argue that this approximation is not good enough, and that problems might be solved by moving beyond it.
Truism or not, it is salutary that Chomsky should remind us that variability is an inevitable consequence of sexual reproduction, and that what he terms a universal grammar can be no exception, whatever its genetic basis.

Noam Chomsky attacks Johann Hari, with some typically bloated, semi-coherent sludge-prose posted on Medialens (comparing him unfavorably to a Stalinist commissar and accusing him of being incapable of comprehending "moral truisms.") As Johann says, it speaks for itself, and I don't have a comment.
I too was struck by Chomsky's use of "truism".
I'd always perceived "truism" as something of a negative word implying question-begging or unexamined assumptions, but Chomsky seems to have something other than that in mind.

A "truism" is a statement or principle that over time comes to be accepted as fact.
If, at some point, proven data should arise that contradicts that accepted truth, then we are left with a "fallacy." But old truisms die-hard and many times those who challenge them are ridiculed.
