  Finches - info and games
Finches are often seed-eating passerine birds, the many species of which are found chiefly in the northern hemisphere, but they also occur in Africa, and one subfamily is endemic to the Neotropics.
In a finching contest, a number of cages each housing a male finch are lined up, usually along a street.
Every time the bird sings its song (which should be the correct tune!) this is marked with a chalk stripe on a wooden stick, and the bird singing its song the most times during one hour wins the contest.

 BTO - Birds of Britain
Most of the finches fall within the family Carduelidae, but the Chaffinch and Brambling are considered sufficiently distinct to merit a family of their own (along with the Blue Chaffinch, found only on the Canary Islands).
The true finches are usually birds of woodland which specialise in eating seeds, each species having a distinctive bill morphology adapated for a particular range of weed or tree seeds.
The exotic finches often kept as cagebirds, such as the Zebra Finch, and which occasionally escape, are not in fact finches but waxbills (family Estrildidae), distinguished by their colourful, small conical bills.

The word "finch" is also used for some estrilids (waxbill family), some Hawaiian honeycreepers, and for a variety of emberizids and related birds.
All "finches," of whatever family, are seed eaters, but what sets the Fringillids apart are their special adaptations for dealing with seeds.
While fringillid finches are surely common enough in the Old and New worlds, often well-known as garden birds in temperate climates, there is certainly a slug of them in Africa and in central and east Asia (40+ species in each region).
