Truncated mean -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The scoring method used in many (An active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition) sports that are evaluated by a panel of judges is a truncated mean: discard the lowest and the highest scores; calculate the mean value of the remaining scores.
The (additional info and facts about interquartile mean) interquartile mean is another example when the lowest 25% and the highest 25% are discarded, and the mean of the remaining scores are calculated.
Unless the underlying distribution is (additional info and facts about symmetric) symmetric, the truncated mean of a sample is unlikely to produce an (additional info and facts about unbiased estimator) unbiased estimator for either the mean or the median.

Mean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sample mean is often used as an estimator of the central tendency such as the population mean.
The mean is the arithmetic average of a set of values, or distribution; however, for skewed distributions, the mean is not the same as the middle value (median), or most likely (mode).
The geometric mean is an average that is useful for sets of numbers that are interpreted according to their product and not their sum (as is the case with the arithmetic mean).

The harmonic mean is an average which is useful for sets of numbers which are defined in relation to some unit, for example speed (distance per unit of time).
The generalized mean is an abstraction of the Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic Means.

In statistics, mean has two related meanings: the average in ordinary English, which is more correctly called the arithmetic mean, to distinguish it from geometric mean or harmonic mean.
The mean value of a function,, on an interval,, can also be calculated (using a limiting process on the data set definition) thus:
Note that not every probability distribution has a defined mean or variance - see the Cauchy distribution for an example.

The use of averaging in building the pyramid structure reduces the aliasing at higher levels of the pyramid and the mean values are generally better representatives of the block region.
In this technique, the mean pyramid is formed as described in truncated mean pyramid.
For each 2x2 block,We use mean value and three difference values to recover the pixel values and then we repeat the calculation for all of the block in the image.

The arithmetic mean may be used to imply that most people's incomes are higher than is in fact the case.
This "average" (arithmetic mean) income is higher than most people's incomes, because high income outliers skew the result higher (in contrast, the median income "resists" such skew).
The geometric mean, harmonic mean, generalized mean, weighted mean, truncated mean, and interquartile mean are described in their own articles and in the Mean article.

 Truncation vs. Filtering
Adjusting the grabbers truncates the distribution and changes the distribution's calculated statistics, such as the mean.
For example, a normal distribution defined with a mean of $100,000 and a standard deviation of $15,000 will no longer have a calculated mean of $100,000 after truncation that isn't symmetrical.
Further technical information: Crystal Ball calculates the truncated mean as the numerical integration of f(x)x from the lower truncation point to the upper truncation point of the distribution, divided by the numerical integration of f(x), where f(x) is the probability distribution function of the nontruncated distribution.

They are truncated mean pyramid, reduced-difference pyramid, S-transform and prediction/residual pyramid.
We found that truncated mean pyramid approach need a large amount of stored pixels to represent the pyramid structure.
However, the reduced-difference pyramid and S-transform approach can reduce the amount of stored data and the entropies of data of both approach are less than that of the original image and truncated mean pyramid approach.

A common remedy is to truncate (i.e., remove) values outside some limits and take the arithmetic mean of the remaining values.
In general, the limits are based on a position measure (e.g., mean, median, quartiles) and a scale measure (e.g., standard deviation, median absolute deviation, interquartile range).
This paper shows that the usual truncation rules produce very different estimates, and that most of the usual rules are biased with respect to the AQTM.
