A trunk road, trunk highway, or strategic road is a major road—usually connecting one or more cities, ports, airports, etc.—which is the recommended route for long-distance and freight traffic.
Trunk roads in England are managed by the Highways Agency.

Grand Trunk Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grand Trunk Road was built in the 16th century by Sher Shah Suri, the then Pathan Emperor of India, with the intention of linking together the remote provinces of his vast empire for administrative and military reasons.
Originally known as the Sadak-e-Azam ('The road of the Emperor'), the Grand Trunk Road was the traditional route for invasions of the subcontinent by Afghan and Persian invaders, as well as one of the most important trade routes in the region.
Today the Grand Trunk Road continues to be one of the major arteries of India and Pakistan, the Indian section is part of the ambitious Golden Quadrilateral Project.

Currently the village of Dobwalls is severed by the A38 trunk road and the associated environmental intrusion creates a very significant adverse impact on the quality of life in the village.

It was felt that the idea of providing these diversion routes for all purpose trunk roads, such as the A421, was a departure from the original concept of motorway diversions.
There were concerns about unacceptable congestion on county roads; no provision for drivers with local destinations; driver confusion about which symbol to follow; multiplicity of diversion routes; and the possible 'rogue' use by drivers of the diversion routes at times of heavy congestion on the A421.
The closure of a busy trunk road tends to result in other roads in the area becoming seriously congested and this makes in difficult for workers to get around the route to set up the signs.
