Radio - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Radio waves are a form of electromagnetic radiation, and are created whenever a charged object accelerates with a frequency that lies in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Radio was used to pass on orders and communications between armies and navies on both sides in World War I; Germany used radio communications for diplomatic messages once its submarine cables were cut by the British.
Radio remote control: Use of radio waves to transmit control data to a remote object as in some early forms of guided missile, some early TV remotes and a range of model boats, cars and aeroplanes.

Land Mobile Spectrum Planning Options - APPENDIX
Radio users not belonging to a given talk group would be unaware of any activity on that talk group, except for the possible consequence of general crowding on the system (which we have already shown would be very small).
Trunked single-site or multisite systems can be shared among a mix of users, with each type of user having an appropriate set of talk groups and priorities.
A total of 2400 radio users have asked for permission to be placed on the system, but funds to purchase new radios compatible with system operation have limited the use of the trunked system (cost: $1500-2500 apiece).

Trunked radio systems are used whenever a large number of mobile radios need to share radio frequencies.
In a trunked radio network, a large number of workgroups can share fewer channels because the trunking equipment dynamically allocates an available channel when users key their radio.
Trunked radio system operators cover a spectrum of companies from operations that serve a local region to international companies competing with cellular service.

Digital trunked systems cannot be monitored by scanners which are capable of receiving analog-only systems.
Digital trunking systems are legal for scanning enthusiasts to monitor as long as the transmissions are not scrambled or encoded for security purposes.

Scanning Trunked Systems by Ben Saladino KC5IRJ
Each radio in the trunked system monitors the control channel to determine what frequency is currently assigned for the active channel on the radio.
Trunked radio systems started out on 800 Mhz frequencies and are now showing up in the 900 Mhz range, and the federal government is even going trunked in their 400Mhz band for some departments.
I normally leave delays turned off in my trunked system banks, because it's unlikely that when a transmission ends, the reply to it will be on the same frequency, so continuing to scan immediately seems more logical to me than waiting a second or two, but that's debatable too.

 Logic Trunked Systems
Other trunking systems allow their mobiles to attempt access even when every channel is full, further congesting the control channel.
If the system is very busy and the channel is released right away, a second conversation may take the channel and a person trying to respond in the first conversation will not be able to answer, since all the channels would be in use.
LTR systems are not nearly as popular with scanner listeners as Motorola or even EDACS, and it is often very difficult to determine exactly who is using the system.

Trunking is a spectrally efficient method of utilising a number of individual channels in a cohesive system of radio traffic management.
Applicants requesting trunked assignments are required to submit to the Agency a full technical description of their requirements, both current and future, including statistical details of likely traffic levels.
The installation should be engineered to provide a system which is at least as efficient as that described in the protocol MPT1327 "A Signalling Standard for Trunked Private Land Mobile Radio Systems".

If your system is not a Motorola trunked system then the Trunktracker can only scan the frequencies in the conventional mode (with lots of beeps, buzzes and missed conversations).
You should have less than 30 repeater frequencies in your system (no less than 3 frequencies will be in use in a trunked system) If you have more than 30 frequencies, then you may have two systems assigned to the same license, but used for two diffrent services.
