The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) was a United Nations trust territory in Micronesia (western Pacific) administered by the United States from July 18, 1947, comprising the former South Pacific Mandate, a League of Nations Mandate administered by Japan and taken by the U.S. in 1944.
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) was established in 1979 and signed a Compact of Free Association with the U.S. (effective October 21, 1986).
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) was set up in 1978 as a commonwealth in political union with the U.S. The Republic of Palau was established in 1981 and concluded a Compact of Free Association with the U.S. (effective October 1, 1994).

The Territory of the Pacific Islands, consisting of the islands formerly held by Japan under mandate in accordance with Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations, is hereby designated as a strategic area and placed under the trusteeship system established in the Charter of the United Nations.
The provisions of Articles 87 and 88 of the Charter shall be applicable to the trust territory, provided that the administering authority may determine the extent of their applicability to any areas which may from time to time be specified by it as closed for security reasons.
The administering authority undertakes to apply in the trust territory the provisions of any international conventions and recommendations which may be appropriate to the particular circumstances of the trust territory and which would be conducive to the achievement of the basic objectives of Article 6 of this agreement.

The dissolution of the Trust Territory government was largely completed with the approval of Compacts of Free Association between the United States and the now-independent Federated States of Micronesia and Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Furthermore, and notwithstanding its holding that the Trust Territory government and High Commissioner were "federal agencies," the court held that the sovereign immunity of the United States would not bar suits for monetary damages for violations of the Trusteeship Agreement against the Trust Territory government and the High Commissioner.

 Equality Across the Pacific
Honolulu is already the metropolis of the Pacific, and a great many Pacific islanders flock to it for higher education, medical care, an island-style but modern good life, etc. Hawaii is small enough a state that the tiny populations of the various islands could make themselves felt in its state legislature.
The islands of the Pacific constitute a chain of steppingstones to the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, all of them areas of great cultural affinity to the United States that might eventually be drawn into the Union as well.
Pacific islanders are heir to a long tradition of national expansion which saw the United States spread first across a continent, then across oceans to work toward a world more united than disunited, more inclined to look for mutual interests and common causes than for a fight.

The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands is a group of more than 2,000 islands and islets and situated in the western Pacific Ocean containing the Northern Mariana Islands, the Eastern and Western Caroline Islands and the Marshall Islands.
Since the term "Territory" as used in the Internal Revenue Code refers only to the former Territories of Alaska and Hawaii (the "organized" territories) and since under the Trust Agreement the United States was not given sovereignty of the Trust Territory, it is not one of the territories of the United States.
Neither is the Trust Territory a possession of the United States since Revenue Ruling 70-193, 1970-1 C.B. 163, holds that the United States does not have such sovereignty over the Marshall Islands (one of the island groups of the Trust Territory) as would justify the position that they constitute a possession of the United States.

The capital of the South Pacific Mandate was Koror, in the Palau islands.
It was precisely from these fortifications in Palau, the Carolines and the Marshall Islands that a significant portion of the Japanese Navy disembarked towards the Philippines, New Guinea, Nauru and the Gilberts islands during 1941-42 in the Pacific War.
Although the islands' naval importance is unquestionable, the Japanese Army was able to utilize many of the natural topographic characteristics of the islands to support air and land detachments as well.
