1977 Senate Hearing on MKULTRA: "Truth" Drugs in Interrogation
The use of so-called "truth" drugs in police work is similar to the accepted psychiatric practice of narco-analysis; the difference in the two procedures lies in their different objectives.
The police investigator is concerned with empirical truth that may be used against the suspect, and therefore almost solely with probative truth: the usefulness of the suspect's revelations depends ultimately on their acceptance in evidence by a court of law.
These drugs distort the perception and interpretation of the sensory input to the central nervous system and affect vision, audition, smell, the sensation of the size of body parts and their position in space, etc. Mescaline and LSD-25 have been used to create experimental "psychotic states," and in a minor way as aids in psychotherapy.

 The Truth About Drug Companies
Drug companies heavily influence medical research thanks to lucrative financial arrangements between the companies and medical school faculty and researchers, and to the fact that drug research is sponsored by the companies that make the drugs being studied.
Drug companies use various strategies to rig drug trials and "to prevent double-blind drug trials that pit one drug against another, instead of against a placebo." They use their influence to control the design of the studies, analysis of the data, and the decision whether to publish the results.
Drug companies use "Phase IV" studies, which were intended to look for unknown side effects, as an excuse to pay doctors to put their patients on a company's new drug, which can induce doctors to enroll patients inappropriately.

Drugs are the fastest-growing part of the health care bill—which itself is rising at an alarming rate.
Drug company revenues (or sales) are a little different, at least as they are reported in summaries of corporate annual reports.
These laws mean that drug companies no longer have to rely on their own research for new drugs, and few of the large ones do.

Thereafter, the drug distributes to the rest of the body and in about 5-10 minutes the concentration is low enough in the brain such that consciouness returns.
Even though the drug is described as an ultra-short acting barbiturate, the drug's half-life is much longer and giving a larger dose ensures adequate concentrations in the brain to maintain anesthesia.
As with nearly all anaesthetic drugs, thiopental causes cardiovascular and respiratory depression resulting in hypotension, apnea and airway obstruction.

The drug czar’s office is distorting the link between the war on drugs and the war on terrorism in order to justify its failed mission in a new political climate.
As national priorities increasingly focus on questions of actual security, drug war bureaucrats are wary of declining public support and eager to protect their questionable share of the federal budget pie.
The ads are politically motivated: the drug czar’s office is using millions of taxpayer dollars trying to persuade the American public and Congress that the failed drug war is still worth funding.

Trust, Truth And Drug Testing Teens
Random drug testing in schools began with student athletes and a "pay to play" philosophy holding that participation in sports is a privilege extended on the condition of abstinence from substance use.
Indeed, teens who have open and honest communication with their parents are more likely to avoid drugs, to try to live up to their parents' expectations regarding drug use, and to say that their parents' methods of keeping them away from drugs are effective.
Whatever the outcome of the spirited public discourse over random drug testing in schools, a surer bet may be some not-so-random drug prevention at home.

The pharmaceutical industry wants to produce drugs that treat or control a chronic condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or depression, so that the person has to take the drug for the rest of their lives and the profits roll in.

Random House Trade | The Truth About the Drug Companies by Marcia Angell
She watched drug companies stray from their original mission of discovering and manufacturing useful drugs and instead become vast marketing machines with unprecedented control over their own fortunes.
As Dr. Angell powerfully demonstrates, claims that high drug prices are necessary to fund research and development are unfounded: The truth is that drug companies funnel the bulk of their resources into the marketing of products of dubious benefit.
Drug companies, she shows, routinely rely on publicly funded institutions for their basic research; they rig clinical trials to make their products look better than they are; and they use their legions of lawyers to stretch out government-granted exclusive marketing rights for years.

She notes the variety of methods—including providing doctors with $11 billion of free samples for patients and flying doctors to conferences as "consultants" when the extent of their consulting activities might mean watching and rating an advertising campaign—but understates physician responsibility for such practices.
While drug makers are, in essence, bribing doctors to at least consider their products by paying them as "consultants," doctors are accepting these payments.

Elizabeth M. Whelan on The Truth About Drug Companies on National Review Online
Her view is that the successful drugs being marketed today are really the result of taxpayer-funded government research, which are then picked up and packaged by pharmaceutical companies who rip off the consumer a second time by charging sky-high prices.
First, she claims that essential life-saving medications are withheld from needy people by greedy companies, while at the same time arguing that people are unnecessarily medicated, that drugs do not work, and that those drugs that do are just copies of the ones that have been around for years.
Indeed, statistics indicate that the research-based drug companies spend more on research and development than NIH does, develop the vast majority of U.S. medicines, and are responsible for over 90 percent of the entire world's new drugs each year.

To bear the full cost of life-extending drugs out of their pensions they would need to put aside $110 a week instead of the $10 they can comfortably manage now.
As more drugs are added (there is a sad inevitability to this pattern) they may have to "trade off drugs against home heating or food" or "string out their drugs by taking them less often than prescribed, or sharing them with a spouse", as is happening now in America.
Angell's biggest beef is with "me-too" drugs, copycats of established drugs, created by trivial molecular modification (not $800 million worth of research and development) then sold to physicians as a superior product, promoted by the sort of spin (and disguised "gifts" to prescription-writing physicians) that only a huge marketing budget can support.

The majority of the new products the industry puts out, says Angell, are “me-too” drugs, which are almost identical to current treatments but “no better than drugs already on the market to treat the same condition.” Around 75 percent of new drugs approved by the FDA are me-too drugs.
