Tryon County is a former county located in the state of North Carolina.
It was formed in 1768 from the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River, though the legislative act that created it did not become effective until April 10, 1769.
On August 14, 1775 49 Tryon residents gathered at the county courthouse and issued a declaration of grievances against the British known as the Tryon Resolves.

In York County Orphans court minutes dated 31 August 1763, it is found Martin petitioned the Court to be released from the guardianship of Philip Bayer.
After the division of Washington in 1779, the Warrant was forwarded to the County Surveyor of Sullivan County, North Carolina (Tennessee) to be surveyed.
In this land entry in Washington County, martin is again named as "Doctor Martin Shoults" This also verified family traditions and it refutes statements of early East Tennessee historians that were "no trained physicians" in the area in the early days.

The same land originally was considered part of Anson County 1750-1762, Mecklenburg County 1762-1769, and Tryon County 1769-1779 (Tryon encompassed segments of NC and SC prior to the settlement of a border dispute).
With the creation of Rutherford and Lincoln counties in NC about 1779, families with the Black surname were residing in the Second Regiment (eastern portion) of Old Rutherford County.
As a search of adjacent counties and old cemeteries in the "Old Tryon" region has failed to produce a verifiable gravesite for Moses Black and his wife Patience, it is quite possible, and even probable, that the graves of Moses and Patience are among the unmarked graves at Mt. Harmony.
